Vanished e-mails and then deleted data

darkercoffee - May 13, 2012 - 5:51pm

Hello everyone,

After the last update (12.0.1) I opened TB Portable and all my e-mails were vanished. I didn't really worry because this wasn't the first time and last times always managed to fix it. I have found a backup of prefs.js file and replaced with the one in the profile folder, assuming I'll see my e-mails when I restart TB Portable. It didn't work. The most annoying part is after replacing prefs.js, my 15.6 GB large TB Portable folder is now only 2.1 GB.

Any suggestions?

what settings get changed?

I've never had to copy over the user settings to get back my emails when I upgraded. Do you mean the lost emails are in the Local Folder or on the server (pop/imap)?
So actual folder size (from tb12.0) changed from 15.6gb to 2.1gb after you copied over the file?

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Still there!

Hi Consul,

Thank you for your reply.

In order to write back to you, I actually went through the files (to check their sizes) and what I have seen; they are there, with actual sizes!! Smiling)

I still get 1.22 GB (sorry, I have written it wrong it was actually 1.22 GB) when I do "get info" on my Mac. And strangely, it somehow didn't recognise the Mail folder of Thunderbird. When I try to carry the whole TB Portable folder to another external drive (like last time it did) it carries only 1.22 GB and it shows 1.22 GB when you try to calculate the size, but actually when you go inside the folders, you may carry all the files one by one, they are there!

I don't know where the problem is, but I'll try to solve the problem (in a few days) by updating a previous backup of my TB Portable and then carry all the e-mail folders one by one, deleting all the msf files to have the new index to be created and hopefully I'll have all like I last left them.

I'll keep the board updated.

Please write if you have any suggestions so I don't screw the whole thing again Smiling

It worked

Everything worked very well, I recovered all my e-mails and successfully updated thunderbird.

I also experienced this

I also experienced this issue. Upgrading from TBP 11 to 12 appears to have blown away my prefs.js with a default "clean" one. Unfortunately, I did not have a recent backup to replace it with.

A few weeks ago I noticed the same issue when I upgraded PuTTY Portable - I lost all my saved sessions. Has something changed in the portable packaging process?
