The PortableApps.com Platform 10.0.1 won't backup from Hard Drive

phay - June 5, 2012 - 3:47am

Hi, I have The PortableApps.com Platform 10.0.1 installed on my 2nd hard drive (I do this so I don't have to do full installs for infrequently run apps, thus minimizing the size of my registry).

When I run the backup utility for this locally installed copy of The PortableApps.com Platform, it begins by backing up its own PortableApps directory, and then attempts to backup the local drive (D:) itself (at which point it just hangs). Is this a limitation / bug in the PortableApps.com software ?

Thanks,
phay

No but but a feature! :)

Thats fully on purpose.
The backup utility has 3 options:

  1. Complete: Full backup of the drive it is running from. That is what you use.
  2. App data: Only the /Appname/Data folders are being backed up. Thats to minimise backup space while preserving all your personal data.
  3. Documents: Only backs up the documents folder on your drive. THis is good if you stick to the convention and have all of your documents inside that folder.

Depending on what you want to backup, you can/have to choose one option. Backing up 100 GB of data should be possible, although thats certainly not what the backup tool was built to do Smiling.
