Platform v12

It's been a long time since the Platform 12 beta was released and the stable version of 12 was promised a couple weeks later and it has been about a year since then plus the release of new apps has slowed down a lot since then. What happened to new apps and Platform v12?

Patience

“Patience is the ability to wait and calmly preserve. We all grow impatient, but some people have more trouble waiting than others do. We tend to forget that all good things take time.” – John Wooden

patiece is waiting a month or

patiece is waiting a month or so after they say "next week" before saying something. i have had a lot of patience. it has been about a year since the betas came out and before today the last new app was almost two months ago. last year there were new apps almost every week and the 12 beta came out a few months after 11 stable with 12 stable promised two weeks later then John messed up his wrist and said new apps and the platform release would be delayed then after a while i forgot about it. its not a huge deal but i was just curious what happened.

I'm actually with sicnessrusso95 on this one. It's fair to ask about releases. The people on this forum tend to rudely say "be patient" to perfectly alright questions.

Sorry

I didn't mean to come across as rude. I too wonder when the release will be as it said on the banner that it was coming soon after the team's return from San Francisco. I did not mean it in a rude way. I know that it will eventually come and a lot of hard work is being put into the release. I am excitingly awaiting for it as well.

Apologies,
PSkilton

Is Platform v12 Still Coming ?

Hi,

Is Platform v12 Still Coming ?

Last year
there was a banner on the home page saying that
Platform v12 was imminent.

I postponed updating
all of my very many apps
to wait for the very latest Platform v12, but
I have not seen anymore news about it in a very long time.

This
Platform v12 Changelog thread
(https://portableapps.com/platform/changelog)
suggests that
development is not happening.

I think
we need to be content, & happy, with
Platform v11 for the forseeable future .. .

I Stand Corrected

After perusing the forums,
I discovered this update:

When is the next Platform release? [March, 2014]

I wish John T. Haller godspeed in his
continuing recovery from his injury, &
I will continue to wait, patiently, for Platform v12.

Thanks

Thanks for the well wishes. There is no need to wait for version 12 to update your apps. 11.2 and 12.0 Beta 2 both have perfectly functional updaters built in.

Experience with Updates

In my experience the best updates are the ones we find ourselves waiting for. I have found that with apps that are frequently updated, particularly Firefox Aurora which receives daily updates, that I lose all excitement and interest in checking out what new features or improvements have been made. It's a bit like having Christmas everyday which would eventually turn into a child's worst nightmare. So I personally have no problem patiently waiting for v12's release, I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.

No News

No news yet. I was going to do a quick bugfix Beta 3 release in December, but got waylaid by my leg.

File associations underpinnings are mostly done but none of the UI work is, and it requires a new options tab with lots of options in it and a new popup window for clicking on an associated extension for the first time to ask what you want to do (think Android asking which app to open with and if you want to do it this time or every time, with the added option of whether you just want it left to the host OS instead of the platform).

We have the code for two others highly requested features closer to done: shutting apps down on exit (relicensed from another dev who agreed to open source his work) and cascading menu (submitted by a volunteer dev) but not yet integrated. Integration would be pretty quick and neither option requires new UI design or translation.

Now that I'm mostly back in the saddle, I'm thinking of doing a quick low-hanging fruit beta 3 (cascading menu, closing down apps, plus the bugs I already fixed here) followed by a 12.0 release within a week to get everybody on the latest code and eliminate the issues with dataloss people experience with improperly shutdown apps and moving on to a weekly beta schedule with bugs and pieces of file extensions released as they come (possibly with an early temporary UI just for web, email, office first followed by the full one to get it in the hands of testers faster).

It's tough as I'm still the only platform dev and the code sat mostly untouched for nearly a year. And I'm under a crushing amount of debt that I have to worry about before more unpaid dev work. That's why I've been working on drive sales, ad revenue, partnerships, etc.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
