ClamWin: Spyware Dr. Detects clawinportable.exe as Trojan.Popuper.Downloader

Just to let someone know that Spyware Dr. Detects clawinportable.exe as Trojan.Popuper.Downloader. I did check the file on several multi engine scans and it does come out negative. I have reported the issue to spyware Dr. but I have not had any news yet....

You can find the (Clean) scan result for the possible false positive detection here:

I know you are trying to be helpful.

I know you are trying to be helpful.

This post is so common. I am not only directing it at you, but at the many helpful PortableApp users.

A search of PortableApps.com false+virus produced 4 pages of topics where people were "just letting you know" that someone else's program is not functioning correctly.

It it almost as common as "Hey John, Did you know that a new beta version of ____ is out?"

These are support forums for PortableApps. John tries to read every one. As far as I can tell the number of posts is increasing every day.

I don't think we need anymore trojan/virus/new version posts.

Re virus reports...

Perhaps you fail to see the potential to prevent an infection across a rather large number of users in the event the product was compromised or to inform users that "NO" their antivirus is ok and should not be deleted by their "Other" security tools...

however there is two major issues here. One is a responsibility to report infected products to the consuming public and the other is to inform the makers of potentially infected products of such issues. These simple facts are important enough as to override feelings of exasperation from regular posters. As a professional in computer security I have to do this.

All the best!

Thanks.

I understand the information part. And maybe some forum members overreact to your helpful information. The fact remains that if your post goes unanswered then some readers who do not search either would maybe suspect that PortableApps contain spyware/trojans/viruses and such.

I even understand the panic/excitement on some users when their anti-virus/spyware program finds a "problem". A lot of PortableApps users are very savvy when it comes to computers. They like to keep them running at peak efficiency and as clean as possible.

As I said the "______________ reported a trojan/virus/malware/spyware in __________" post has to be one of the top three posts that we get here. I don't think that anyone is intentionally trying to be disruptive or counterproductive.
