Portable Python

If this isn't the right forum I'm happy for it to be shifted elsewhere.

I know this isn't exactly new but I'm wondering if anyone has any strong feelings about a preferred portable python?

I'm working on building GnuCash with python bindings (something famously tricky on Win so desirable outside of the PA universe as well as within) but figured I may as well go the whole hog and do it portably too.

Thoughts?

Suggestion

WinPython is excellent, though perhaps overkill. It has the advantages of current releases for Python 2 or 3 and for 32 and 64 bit OSes.

Overkill? I see what you mean

I was curious as to what you meant by overkill.

I have just had a look at the d/l files for WinPython and I'm going to suggest that most people will balk at the scripting environment being substantially bigger than the application.

i.e. I have bandwidth and connectivity suitable for a d/l that size on an "I'll play with it" basis but many people won't.

If anyone is puzzled WinPython 3.3 / 32 bit is a 239MB d/l

For comparison Python 3.4 "as is" for windows is under 24MB.

A substantial difference.

What is all the extra stuff for? If it makes my project work, great, but how am I going to sell (conceptually not financially) it to someone else? It is comparable in size to a complete office suite like Libre Office!

I'll give it a go early next week if you think it has something that'll play nicely with GnuCash.

P.S. thank you for your consideration, it is often the thought that prompts someone to do something
