Desktop icons disappear when platform is open

I only noticed this problem today when it happened on my computer where i have the desktop icons enabled. I did Notice it at my school but they used the Group Policy to disable it until recently where i thought that the group policy was defective on every one elses machines. Support would be really nice as i like the desktop icons as much as any one else . Frankie
