Mozilla Thunderbird
is an excellent contact manager and email client. There's a portable version on this site.
Todos and Calendar
You can also add todos and a calendar with the Lightning extension. Unfortunately, there's no solid way to sync all this with a Palm yet. You can sync the address book in TB with Palm using an extension, but I don't think it's ready for production use.

I dont want the Palm anymore
I dont want the Palm anymore (its a really old one)
just want their contact manager software.
I really dig the ability to hide some contacts and keep the other ones visible.
No calendar, no ToDo, just contacts and PIM.
Any suggestions?

First off... PIM means contacts + todos + calendar
If you just want contacts... then you just need an address book. And Thunderbird has a solid address book inside of it. I don't think you can set individual records to private like in Palm. And it doesn't have categories... but you COULD create separate address books... one for work, one for personal, for instance. They all show up in the left pane and you can switch between them, kinda like categories.
I'm gonna release an optional stub launcher so that you can launch the address book without launching the rest of Thunderbird at some point, too (useful for quickly looking up an address when you don't need to check your email). Kinda like the additional stub launchers for OpenOffice.org Portable that let you directly launch Write, Calc, etc.

Anyway, you can try it out if you'd like:
Download Thunderbird Portable Address Book Stub Launcher
Just download that file, ThunderbirdPortableAddressBook.exe, and place it within your ThunderbirdPortable directory next to ThunderbirdPortable.exe. Running it will launch ThunderbirdPortable.exe with the -addressbook command line parameter, starting your TB address book directly. You can start the full TB from the address book window by clicking Tools - Mail & Newsgroups or just hitting CTRL-1. And the stub launcher will show up in PortableApps Menu as "Thunderbird Portable (Address Book)".

Nope
Stub launchers don't do that. They don't have their own internal splash screens since all they do is call the main launcher with a command line parameter. The OpenOffice.org Portable stubs work the same way.

KDE-PIM/Pi for Memory Stick
There is a Memory Stick version of the KDE-PIM suite featuring KOrganizer (Calendar and Todos) and KAddressBook (Contacts). I have it on my USB device in the PortableApps Menu.
