Extraction Utility?

Hello John;

Is there any way to extract the Clam win files with out installing them.

I ask this because that is what I am doing to get the new files. Then I just replace your Portable directories with the new ones. It works but I had to ask. I have done this anumber of times and it does work for me.

Universal Extractor

Use Universal Extractor, I have it and it's able to extract a lot of exe files that I download. You can search here or google for it.

It's on their website

They tell you how you can make clamwin portable, but I'd rather wait for the official PA.com's release.

Hello Group; I only posted

Hello Group;

I only posted because it is a simple and temporay solution until a new offical version is released. I have done this a number of times while waiting. John most likely does a lot more then what I did to the files. But it can be done for one portable app.

If it was more difficult I would have had to get more help then I did before I first tried this out. Think about it John and who ever else is making all of these only has so much time. If you can update just this one app yourself it would allow them to work on other apps that are not just a cut and paste operation.

Side note: I did try the universal extractor but I found many files only partially extraced. They all have "_" in fornt of the file name. So I will just install and cut and and paste. But thank you for the tip.

It is to bad that the developers do not give you a plain zip file for the applications that are being made into portable apps by portableapp.com

Actually

You can see all the modifications he makes on the support page.
https://portableapps.com/support/clamwin_portable#modifications
All he does is include the launcher and then UPX them.

Oh and John, it says OpenOffice.org Blum

Hello rmccue; Thank you, I

Hello rmccue;

Thank you, I never noticed that before. So I can use Johns compression options and then keep useing his Calm Win launcher on newer versions untill he gets time to do an new release.

I will try this out in the next few days on the files that I copied over and did not compress at all.

If you use the UPX options mentioned on that link...

...remember to not include the "-k" (keep) switch as it'll keep a copy of the old files and make the space used even higher. I find -k good for testing, but once you're into "production phase", I drop it.

Cleaning up (finding/deleting) all the ex~, dl~, and sy~ files is a pain.

upx

Hi,
I have followed the instructions on the ClamWin home site in regards to making the current version 0.88.7 portable.
It appears to work and updates definitions correctly.
However it appears to be approx 55% larger in size than the 0.88.5 version on this site.
I understand ppl have made suggestions to use UPX for compressing .exe and .dll files.
I have downloaded it but unfortunately I do not know how to use it.
Can someone offer an idiots guide or tutorial on how I should use it to shrink my 0.88.7 version?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should know that UPX

You should know that UPX (file upx.exe) is a command line program, it has to be run from a console window.
If you download UPX as a zip package from here, extract the file upx.exe to the folder where ClamWin.exe is. Then, from a console window and once you are in the folder where the exe's are, simply run this command for every exe and dll you want to compress:

upx --best filename.exe

or

upx --best filename.dll

when finished, you can delete upx.exe.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, or don't like this command line thing, then use one of the many GUIs for UPX, for example UPXShell, and compress every exe and dll in the ClamWin folder.

UPX

thanks allesklar for the tip
I started off doing this through the command line as per your instructions and got half way, and then decided to try UPXShell .
I notice it has compressed approx 4Mb but still is around 25.6Mb as compared to 18.6 for version 0.88.5 from here.
Is this about right, or do you think I may have done something wrong initially?

lib folder

Well, I guess you've only UPX'd files on folder bin. The same can be done with files on the lib directory, all files there are executables indeed, so you can UPX them. Compress files .pyd, .dll and .exe.
There's also a zip file called clamwin.zip on the lib folder which can be reduced, decompress and compress it again using maximum zip compression.
That should be enough.

Checked all folders

hi allesklar,
no, I did compress all .exe and .dll files. I checked all the folders as instructed. You say you can compress .pyd files which I wasn't aware of or stated before.
I have now done that.
When I decompress and re-compress clamwin.zip and put back into the lib Folder
the program will not work when I try it. I have tried different compression settings using both winrar and 7-zip ( yes it has the .zip extension )
So I have inserted the original clamwin.zip file back into the lib folder. I guess that will have to do unless you can shed some more light on what may be the problem.
Thanks for your help so far.

edit....I now know what I did wrong... I included the Clamwin folder I created when re-compressing clamwin.zip, instead of just zipping all files inside that folder.
Excellent...I now have a size comparable to the 0.88.5 version

and allesklar, once again thank you for your previous help .
