VIRUS - Watch out for Songbird

I just downloaded Songbird right from the portableapps website, installed and presto, instant Virus!!!

I find it hard to believe that was possible.

I clicked on a button on the side, Songbird.me and it tell my I have tons of viruses and it would NOT let me off that screen!!!

I have the proof in the form of a screenshot, if anybody it interested.

Anyways, first, last, and only time I will ever download another program from this site without reading reviews first.

Shame, shame, shame!

Incorrect

Songbird Portable is clean and virus free, as always, and as every single app from here has been for 10 years. To confirm this, you can see that it is 100% clean as verified by 54 antivirus engines at Virus Total. Songbird is, however, discontinued.

What you're looking at is the now-defunct songbird.me website. As Songbird is discontinued, it's now a parked domain with the typical ads and offers to automatically download and run random EXE files. Unfortunately, the website is linked rather prominently within Songbird itself. It should not be visited.

Correct - no warnings on your website

Correct, there are NO warnings on your website, I downloaded it from there, and within 5 minutes I have a virus.

If the app if defunct, it should be removed from your website.

If there is a known problem, the information should be displayed prominentyly on the info page of the app.

I am surpised at the attitude you guys are showing, its a bit like the Dead Bird skit in Monty Python, or the Case of The Kippers on Fawlty Towers.

Virus

The only way you could have gotten a virus is if you selected to run something.exe after visiting songbird.me and being redirected to a something.desktopsupport.com website or similar. The redirector seems random (for some odd reason) and just sent me to blackdoctor.org. As it is possible for a user to select to run an EXE downloaded from the browser within Songbird, I've added a warning about it to the product page. Note that any antivirus, even the basic Windows Defender on Windows 8/8.1, will block that type of EXE from even running.

For future reference, NEVER EVER EVER run a random .EXE file that any web page serves to you that you didn't specifically request. EVER. This should be rule 1 on the internet.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info, I see the portableapps.com website Songbird page has been updated to reflect this new revelation.

I wonder if the Norwegian Blue parrot really has as beautiful a song as claimed...

Not a virus

I have just installed and scanned the official Songbird Portable release, and there are no viruses in it.

Songbird.me is just a webpage and clicking on this service inside Songbird just shows you that webpage, you can also visit it in any browser. It used to be Songbird's music discovery service, but since the company went bust the website has been replaced by an ad redirection service.

Visiting songbird.me will redirect you to a number of different ads. Obviously one of them was a scam "you've got viruses, pay for our software and we'll get rid of them" type thing (far too common these days), while for me I was shown a "Facebook pays $x per day to Australian residents" and "Win a free gift card at store X", and now it just continually redirects me to a "this domain is for sale" page.

There is nothing to worry about, you do not have any viruses. You can delete this service from Songbird and keep using it without problem, just go to Tools->Options->Add-ons, click on the Songbird.me service and then click Uninstall.
