PortableApps on Linux via WINE?

Hello,

I've been thinking for quite some time now to make a switch to Linux, but what has always held me back was the lack of portable apps for Linux. I've been reading lately that WINE is getting better so was wondering if it's a feasible option to run various PortableApps via WINE on Linux? Would this actually provide a working solution or is it more of a one-time thing for apps that aren't available on Linux but one most really use?

I'm no expert, but I'm willing to try and help

I'm pretty sure I've read that at least some of the PortableApps have been tested on WINE.

Maybe you can test it out PortableApps (and the programs you use) on a virtual machine with Linux + WINE and see how it goes?

not the worst place to start --> http://www.howtogeek.com/196060/beginner-geek-how-to-create-and-use-virt...

With the holidays the forums seem a bit less used than usual, but I'm certain someone will be along later to give you better advice than what I've given.

I hope that helps.

Good luck Smile

The PortableApps Platform and

The PortableApps Platform and Launcher are tested on Wine.

For individual apps, some will work without issue, others may work with some problems, while others definitely won't work.

Unfortunately we don't have a list of which apps fall into which category, because it would just be far too time-consuming to compile, and the list would probably change with every new release of Wine.

I have (a long time ago) checked a few of my own official apps on Wine to mixed results, but unfortunately I have forgotten the results except the irony that dotNETInspector was the only one that worked 100% without errors, but is useless on Linux.

Don't Really Test

We don't really test individual apps under Wine at the moment due to time but most will work under Wine. Our platform, app store, updater, installer, launcher, etc all work under Wine and include specific code to work around some Wine bugs.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
