Network Connectivity Problems (Thunderbird, Firefox, Pidgin)

I am a long time user of portableapps software, and this problem has boggled me for quite a while. Around December 2014, I started noticing network connectivity issues (not always consistent) with many of my portable apps:

Firefox - pages don't load sometimes. i get Content Encoding Error and Secure Connection Failed errors frequently.

Thunderbird - I use POP email for a few email addresses. Sometimes, when checking email, it shows that there are 1 out of x emails, but it only download a couple at a time. I have to re-send/receive to get all of them downloaded.

Pidgin - yahoo, icq, and aol usually does not connect, but sporadically does.

Dropbox - This is not a portable app, but I notice that it stops syncing after a while (even though it says it's syncing). I notice the dropbox system tray icon sometimes have an "x" and an error message "cannot establish secure connection" really quickly before "syncing" again.

Here are some comments:
1. My non-portable installations of Chrome and IE are functioning fine.
2. I have a laptop where I also run these portable apps and the same symptoms show up.
3. I suspect this has to do with SSL settings when SSL 3.0 fallback issues were patched by windows in December.

Here are the things I have tried with no success:
1. I have updated all programs to the most recent version. (and updated flash for firefox)
2. rebooted router
3. ran firefox without add-ons.
4. tried uninstalling and reinstalling windows updates one by one to see if a WU is causing problems.
5. updated bios (laptop)
6. changed DNS servers
7. updated network adapter driver

Anyways, i appreciate any insight to this puzzle. Please help.

Thanks.

Just in case this could help

Just in case this could help someone else, I finally figured out the problem. Somehow my firewall program got corrupted. I uninstalled and re-installed zone alarm and everything worked fine. I had read that some of its internet log files get corrupted over time.

zone alarm????

if you install one of the biggest nonsense malware called zone alarm, then you should not be surprised when your windows starts breaking down.

I actually had version 9.2.

I actually had version 9.2. (IIRC) installed. this version is several years old and was before they messed with the outbound traffic control. I had been using it for quite a while with no problem. It surprised me that it started causing issues now.
