Tesseract 1.02

I was investigating the types of Open Source software out there and found this.

"A commercial quality OCR engine originally developed at HP between 1985 and 1995. In 1995, this engine was among the top 3 evaluated by UNLV. It was open-sourced by HP and UNLV in 2005."

I tried to download and install this program from sourceforge.net. I discovered they were simply providing the code in a "tarball". I am pretty sure I can figure out what to do with the tar file (it is just another type of zip right?). I do not have any idea how to "compile" the source into a program. I assume I need a compiler? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Which program?

Tarball = GZipped Tarfile
Tar is a format which makes several files into one. It is usually then GZipped and called a tarball.
Short story: If you have 7-Zip, WinRar, etc you can open it.
