Strange Ad

I was a little surprised to log in today and see an add "Sweet Chinese Women Are Ready to Date U". If this had been an e-mail it would have ended up in the spam bucket. It seemed somehow inappropriate for this site.

Those HideMyBills.com ads are

Those HideMyBills.com ads are also pretty annoying.

some thoughts on ads

JTH has spoken on this before but I've been paying more attention since I am deliberately allowing ads on sites I believe in.

The asian ladies dating (I don't think I got the same one as you) is, I think, a kind of fall back
"no ads have interested this person for a while, I know, let's offer asian ladies"
Makes no sense to someone in a relationship, is possibly insulting to women, people who like someone of the same gender and people who find the idea distasteful.

What I do is look at an ad once a week or so that is for something I am interested in even if I have no plans on purchasing it. A recent example is an advert for a book on graph databases, I don't need the book but I am interested and it keeps the ads directed to my interests rather than the default male who, presumably, really does want to "invest" in dating an asian lady.

To put it another way, I'd rather the advert providers knew the truth rather than presumed lowest common denominator which seems quite yucky.

Choose an ad that is "in your area of interest" once a week or so and things should improve.

I think their memory span is about a week but could be wrong.

P.S. one last thought, if you, I and other people each choose something other than the default ad occasionally we should, theoretically, raise the standard of ads offered to other PA folk too.

P.P.S aka Edit: dunno what has happened but I'm getting a complete new set of ads, none interest me so far. Presumably I prompted a change of some sort.

Also related to search history

From what I can tell, the ads also at times relate to your search history with Google's products - IE: Search on Android, Chrome, Google.com (when logged in), etc.

Search History

In about six weeks we will have been married 55 years. I can assure you I have not been searching for Chinese Ladies. Smile

Just to reinforce the randomness

Today I am getting ads for Stormfall, I don't play games on computers at all and certainly not any on-line ones. I wouldn't have know anything about it except for the ad.

LOL

Search history seems to play in on occasion, but not all the time - I've seen these Chinese Lady ads as well - must be some kind of default.

Russian Ladies this w/e I blame Eurovision :)

If anyone else here was sentient in the decade from the mid 1970's onwards Boney-M doing Rasputin is a treat. Caribbean folk, in Germany, pretending to be Russian, you don't get that nowadays ... but then there is Eurovision.

Refresh yourself with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYnVYJDxu2Q as an example of music without any apparent sense of self-awareness.

next installment, no Flash here!

My main browser is FF and I've turned off Flash (you should too until further notice), only allowing it where trusted (e.g. BBC).

PA is one of the sites I allow ads on (but not Flash at the moment) and this is presenting a new and interesting view of things apart from the grey box for the unseen advert.

I think I'm liking the Flash ban in another way in that I'm getting ads I haven't seen before.
