TreeSize Free now supports network drives

The TreeSize Free page (https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/treesize-free-portable) states " Note that TreeSize Free will not work on network drives. Purchasing TreeSize Personal or Professional will enable this functionality.".

This initially turned me off, but I looked at the creator's website and found that recent releases do support (some) network drives. In the changelog I found the following:

Version 3.2: Released on 30 Sep 2014
• TreeSize Free now scans network drives (except Windows servers and network drives within a Windows domain).

Further details of network scanning capabilities are detailed on the following page:
http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/scan-network-drives.shtml

This page includes the following limitation: "Scanning network drives in commercial environments, however, is not possible with TreeSize Free. If you require this feature, give the TreeSize Professional Edition a try.".

It would seem therefore, anyone with a NAS and/or a cloud drive can use TreeSize Free as long as they do so in a non-commercial environment.

ITYM Shares

Treesize portable is at 3.3.2 which works fine with network shares (i.e. the remote directory is viewed as part of the local file system) as opposed to network drives proper.

e.g. TreesizePro

Full Network Support

TreeSize Professional offers full support for network drives and scans UNC paths like Servershare

That's right

Hello Wm,
You're correct to say TreeSize Free (the portable version available from this site) is now at 3.3.2. The purpose of my post was to say that these changes to TreeSize Free started in version 3.2, but the PortableApps page for the application was not changed to reflect the change. The page says: " Note that TreeSize Free will not work on network drives". This wording is now out of date and ideally should be updated.

Heh, words mean things :)

I think the words are correct because TreeSize Free will not find drives on a network unless they are shared, i.e. are part of the local directory tree.

My understanding is a place in a network that *hasn't* been attached to the host directory tree isn't accessible to TreeSize Free but may be accessible to the Pro version.

The Free version doesn't explore the network, just the local file tree.

The Free version is a useful tool in the PA set but it doesn't, AFAICT "work on network drives".

Does the distinction make sense?

Wm
