Play nice

I've been a member of this forum for 7 years 7 months. I've seen a lot of people come and go, and I've enjoyed watching this community grow and the selection and quality of apps increase each year. When I logged on tonight, to catch up on forum posts, I was greeted by a post who's subject line was " Nah, I'm thinking ***** bigger than brain ".

I understand humor, and appreciate it in it's many forms. I have to wonder if this comment was necessary, helpful, or relevant to what was being discussed. When I looked at this particular member's posts, I found more of the same. Sometimes they were helpful, sometimes what was said was offensive and this particular member was even called out for being inappropriate on several occasions.

Mr. Haller, I am grateful for what you have created- starting with the first version of Firefox portable. I am also grateful to have been a member of these forums. However, if the rude and often offensive posts continue, I will have to ask that you delete me from your forums. At the very least, I hope this member is reminded to "Play Nice - This community is only as strong as it's members. As such, everyone is expected to conduct themselves accordingly. Name-calling, insults, etc have no place here."

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Edit: Thank you GC for fixing the post I referenced, I have edited my post to follow your lead.

I totally agree

The comment to which you refer certainly was not necessary, and has no place in a forum such as this. Over recent weeks I have noticed several such postings, where the intention of the poster appears to be to shock the reader, and to insult the user to whose post he is responding.

I thought the situation had reach a nadir in the following thread, which again included what most right-minded forum users would consider to be a totally unnecessary posting:

https://portableapps.com/node/52564

In that thread, I reminded the poster of the "play nice" rules, the poster to whom the insult was aimed suggested the poster should be banned, and John issued a reprimand.

Alas, despite a respite since that thread, we have witnessed a return to the insulting posts. This is the post referred to by Steve_Storm:

https://portableapps.com/node/52714

I think the situation has reached a stage where users wishing to ask genuine questions in the forums will think long and hard about whether to bother, given that they run the risk of being insulted or demeaned.

I also agree

Steve_Storm, thanks for posting this. I have been thinking of posting a similar comment for the past couple of days. The user in question has some other posts that I have found objectionable. There was an exchange a couple of weeks ago that I stepped into to try to defuse it. Since then I have seen more comments from (2 letter name) and the other person (ethnicreference_animalreference) most going back and forth between them. They are inappropriate, out of place, and not productive. My thought was to post at the end of their last exchange to tell them to stop it. Hopefully this thread will have some effect.

Adults?

The one major fact that argues against the assumption that "we should all be adults here" is that this is not an 'adults only site' and many of it's users, developers and observers are not necessarily adults. All contributions should reflect that both adults and young people (including children) are regular users of the site and we all need to be mindful of that fact when making comments.

yes, essentially

I do not believe this is a forum aimed at (say) 6 year olds. If you believe that you are a dumb [swear removed by mod JTH] (ordinary word).

Teenagers, perhaps, but since they seem to be swopping naked images more than you and I why should we be the rude adults?

I do rude stuff in private not in public!

Swearing

Your comment has been filtered for unnecessary swearing. Please stop this sort of unnecessary antagonization. There are tons of folks under 18 that use this site. There are some as young as 10 that use this site and our software. We've also had developers as young as 13 contributing. And we have users all over the world from all sorts of cultures. It doesn't matter what you think of swearing and if it's appropriate for your age/culture. You just need to accept that it is not permitted on this site and refrain from doing it.

Forum Guidelines and Playing Nice

I've added a link to the forum guidelines to the main Forums page along with a reminder to be helpful and play nice. I've added a few new moderators to assist with keeping things civil. There may be some growing pains as they settle in to their new responsibilities. I'll be posting a note about our helpful new mods and a reminder on conduct in a day or so.

I give my sincerest apologies.

Hi, all.

At the bottom of my comment on this thread, it says a portion of my comment was removed for violation of the forum rules, but I'm not sure what I said that was in violation.

Also, over on this thread, it's quite clear that in addition to someone else, @JKEngineer was referring to me. Not that I blame them. Their observations are their observations; there's no getting around that. I'm just stating I'm aware that it was a reference to me.

Regarding these things, I assure you that I usually don't try to be rude to others (except in self-defence to an extent), and I don't want to cause trouble. I sincerely apologise for any misconduct I may have done recently that was against forum rules, and if anyone can tell me what I did wrong or what aspects they feel I can work to improve on, I promise I'll try my best to act more appropriate. Smile

I don't remember exactly what your pre-edit post said, but...

AIR you used a particular word which consisted of four distinct letters, the first of which was an "f". I'm not sure if vf2nsr's reference to the Forum Guidelines was specifically to "Be Polite and Patient", as use of that word is generally considered impolite, or "Play Nice", which mentions "Name-calling, insults, etc have no place here.", but in either case, I'm pretty sure that particular word (and perhaps the way you said it?) is why it was edited. Also, I have a feeling that vf2nsr may have chosen to edit your post because of John's post requesting that everyone (not specifically directed at you, or the person you were saying it to, but at us forum users as a group). Whether this was the right thing to do or not, I don't know, but perhaps the wording of the edit is a little strong... IDK.

I hope that everyone has learned something from this experience, and that it will be a long time before anyone needs a reminder of the forum guidelines.

[nods] :)

I agree. I too hope it can be a while before such a reminder becomes necessary. I personally appreciate the advice you've given, and I will work to improve my behaviour accordingly. As I said, I've never been here to cause trouble, but I do make mistakes. But now I've been made aware of them, and I intend to fix those transgressions for the future. Smile

Time for me I guess

I apologize if my message was Strong the intent was to get this all sorted and stopped. I have spoken to John and Grd and we have worked somethings out. IN fact I was wrong for being so strong in my original statement. ( Since modified)

In reality this was a good thing was we have all learned from it.

Toquote my boss in my (paid) job (not here) "All is good in Whoville"

Thank you, CeltcKat

I appreciate your responses to this issue. I found the posts you made that I referenced much less objectionable than the others at issue. I did want to make that clear. They did, however, feed into an increase in "not nice" on the site, and I felt that was not a good thing.

tut, start again

by asking "which posts of mine" you are asking for revision which is what *shouldn't* happen and if I, for instance, responded in kind the whole thing would start again.

I'd expect to be told off

But there is a difference, I'd be told off for using swearwords, you would be told off for being a malicious idiot.

Again, Please Stop

Both posts of yours in this thread seem purposely antagonistic. Calling Whoville a reference to poverty and hovels. And this post here, take a moment and reflect on the fact that you're calling someone a "malicious idiot" in a thread where people are specifically asking everyone to play nice after already being warned previously by a mod about similar postings. I'm unsure why you continue to be needlessly antagonistic, but that behavior on this site needs to end now. Please consider this your final warning on the subject.

Others do not need to respond to this specific post as it has been handled by a mod.
