Portable note taking app recommendation

Hi there, I'm looking for a recommendation of one of the note taking/stickie apps. I need something that will support multiple notes organized in a hierarchical format with the ability to back up information periodically via ftp, or with some other cloud option. The app should also be well documented with at least some moderately active community support. I've started using PNotes, but for some reason the notes revert back to the older, previously saved versions every time I sync via FTP. Their forums are not accessible at the moment for new members. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to try all of the note taking apps, but was looking for some direction on which ones to try first.
