In response to the "What's on your portable?" threads we've seen here, I had a thought that hits closer to home for me, so I thought I'd start this thread: Others and I have on occasion gleaned some useful app or another that we didn't know about from such threads as these, but not often, mainly cuz folks simply LIST their wares, rather than give us links or tell us about said apps. There ought to be, I'm thinking, something that will encourage folk to tell us something about these favorite apps they have on their drives. Therefore, it is the stated purpose of this thread to not simply list your favored apps, but instead for y'all to RECOMMEND specific portable software you've found on the web - including links to same - so that the rest of us can also benefit from the gems you've mined from the www. I'll start things off here with a few of my faves: 1) Portable Opera - the best web browser around - IMHO (two variants): 2) NoteTab - Powerful, highly versatile/customizable text/HTML editor and viewer: 3) Universal Extractor - small app with which one can "make" (actually, 'cause to become' is more accurate) various apps portable: 4) PowerDesk - The single best File Mgr on the planet (again, IMHO anuyway...): 5) ImgBurn - great little app for burning those Live Linux CD ISO files to CD/DVD. Also can be used to blank your discs. I'll be interested to see what great apps folks have uncovered that I haven't yet run into myself ( categories: )

i have a question about powerdEsk though like if ure at a library pc and all drives are restricted does powerdEsk show them anyway?
also lol!!! portable apps are sweet to use at library computers and school computers they are also cool to run portabily ones said computer when they are utilties such as winMd5Sum, qemu, uniextract, Keepass, some games etc. But when said app was made to function as a system app such as Mozilla Firefox then i would rather install it on main PC and keep a copy of install and extensions archived on my USB. Read and Writes can also "fry" usb drives after awhile (or when ure using usb 1.0
) It is quite perplexing to wait 20-40 secs waiting for firefox to load from my USB backup settings from my main pc to usb then restore my portable settings and etc. Instead I could possibly install firefox on hardrive and run portable Mozilla Firefox on USB when im at school at friends house school and then when i get home synch bookmarks etc! There are many other apps that will never be portable DAEMON Tools, ATM virtualbox, etc 
but they could be usefull portabily but thinking realistically i just stay satisfied running them stable and installed on my home PC

Well, I can't really answer that. Whilst I do go to my local 'brary and use PowerDesk ("PD") when running stuff off my thumb, I have no way of knowing whether or not a drive is "restricted".
Can you suggest some ways I might check into this? If so, then I can check into it next time I'm at the 'brary and let you know what I've found.
(Btw, I have a # of portable FileMgrs I use on occasion - incl. the excellent A43 - it's just that PD is my *main* app for day to day File Mgmt tasks...)

like can u go to ure computerwhen u are at the library ? and if so are there any drives there or like can u go to root of the C drive? like in the address bar type "c:" minus the quotations you can do this in either explorer or internet explorer (not firefox since u will always see it
)

Yes, there's drives shown (incl. my thumbdrive), tho' I never bothered to explore any of 'em, so I can't tell you at the moment how many, their names, what's on 'em, etc. - I'll hafta check into that next time I go. And yup, it goes to the C drive's "root" just fine.
So I'm guessing that you grew up on the English language then, or was it perhaps some other tongue?...
As for me, I'm mixed race: White-Mohawk Indian, and grew up speaking English.
Took 3 yrs "Spanglish" (as we liked to call it back then) in High school, and never used it in real life till a bunch of Cuban refugess started attending my church at the time some years later. Great folks, they were - I miss 'em, but I had to leave and find a different church, so those friendships were left behind. I even noticed that they speak (pronounce) Spanish differently than I learned it - for example, they tend to leave off non-dependent "s" 's in most words (like, my buddy Oscar would be called "O-car" by the Cubans).

yea cubans... how would i put this politly their spanish is more slang or a derivative then actual spanish(a mixure of indigenous native language+spanish+a few others). So when they speak it sometimes it sounds very different then what u learn in school. Since they base that spanish on "spain" spanish. So its much more proper. But this is almost the case for many other spanish speaking country. But this is the same with english, school teaches teach us "English" but yet across america their are different tongues or branches of it: Southern, Slang, Northern, etc?

What you describe...
...is common in much of Latinoamerica, from what I understand (not just Cuba). In fact, I heard from a former missionary friend who spent some time in Spain that the Spanish tend to view Latinoamericanas with some disdain. I'd guess it's similar to the way the Brits years ago (and maybe still?) regard us Yanks. In both cases, "THEY" are the mother country, and the 'children' have not "lived up to" (whatever that means) their expectations for us.
More likely, I think, is that in both cases it's just a case of sour grapes for our having broken away from the mother country in the first place...
As to Mohawk, my great-aunt (full-blooded Mohawk) taught me some of it years ago, but I never really got proficient in it.

Well, mostly cuz 7-zip is not a file manager, whereas PowerdEsk IS a File mgr, AND includes built-in zipfile mgmt for the most common formats.
Whatever archives ain't covered by PD I use IZarc for (also free, and also PORTable!)
Uh, WAIT - I notice you spelled it "powerdIsk", and then went on to recommend to me some apps for encryption. You musta misread my post's text. Read it again, and better yet, follow the link I gave for it. You'll see what powerdEsk is, and what it can do.
As for toned-down versions of apps, my motto has always been something like:
"If it does what I need it to do, I don't give a rip what the FULL version can do - esp. if it does what I need it to do for FREE!..."
And PD's "toned-down version" runs circles around just about any FileMgr OUT there, incl. paid "full" versions.
In fact, I prefer the latest free version of it OVER the (now 2 versions old) retail "full" version that I own.
Finally, as to "Portability isnt an issue on my own PC", my reply is that it SHOULD be.
What I mean is, if you could replace half of your PCs installed app base w/ portable apps, then it would only take about half as long to replace said apps onto your system if it should ever get fried, or your HDD dies. Cuz presumably, you've got said apps sitting around on a USB drive or C-ROM somewhere, and all you gotta do is simply COPY 'em over to your system, as opposed to having to re-install EVERYthing!..
