microsoft becoming more anal about open source

I wonder if this is something that would have any bearing on what goes on here. They can't go after or muck with individuals with singular programs, for the most part, but those that make things easier or condsolidated, like a 'suite' could be hassled.

I dont think so

There are too many meanings for "Suite".

in the news today/yesterday about MS and linux

You can find articles online about how MS is listing all the various copyright infringements that out there in open source. They aren't doing any litigation right now, but just seem to be putting it out there that they are watching.

We had recent posts here about MS and Sandisk looking to work in the future, U3 going kaput ... just seemed ominous.

When I mentioned 'suite' I was trying to show how the music industry didn't really go after the users (at first) of programs like napster or kazaa, but rather at the software deovelpers/hosters themselves.

Accusations by type of

Accusations by type of program without specifying the 'infringing' code and the relevant patent is just innuendo and FUD. Microsoft has NOT gone public with ANY violations.

violations are public - specifics/where is not

I've seen many articles posted today and yesterday about it. Here is one: http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/entdev/article.php/3677706 . Even Stallman of Linux said that they found them.
But like I said in my first post, they are just putting it out there.

Stallman did not

Stallman made reference to a 2004 study by a group selling insurance that identified 283 possible patent infringements (of which they said 27 were owned by Microsoft), none of which have been adjudicated before or since. The specific code and patents have never been identified. Some have considered the announcement akin to a 'protection racket' since the group making the claim also set pricing at $150,000 per year for 'insurance'.

If you claim 'violations of patents', back them up with specifics. Without specifics, claims are just FUD.
