Staying ahead of the MicroSatan curve

Microsoft has just released Office 07. When will Openoffice.com allow the saving and reading of documents and spreadsheets with these new suffixes?

Not Recommended

Use of the Office 2007-specific file formats is not recommended due to compatibility issues. I know of no businesses that plans to adopt them as they'd have to update every PC in their company to support it.

You mean OpenOffice.org. Blum

They're using a new

They're using a new extension? I didn't know. I usually stay ahead of Microsoft news like this... Pardon Blum

Yup.

I think it's docx, I already heard some friends have trouble with not being able to open their word document on an older version and had NO idea what was going on. Not a good idea in my thinking. ESPECIALLY is docx is the default save format, people are going to have that problem much to much.

Yup

Me and a co-worker just got new computers with Office 07 pre-installed. The IT guy said that we where going to have problems with it due to the fact that we where the only two guys with 07. Luckily I don't really use Office much, but still, I always make sure I save the files to a previous version.

One semi-decent thing about

One semi-decent thing about the new format is that they're not binary files like the previous versions of Word, Excel, etc. They're actually .zip files renamed to .docx and whatnot to compress the files. Use Winzip to open a .docx file and you'll see that it's made up of XML files (and some other stuff that I forget).

Yes, I know...M$ should have adopted the Oasis standard for XML documents...and I agree.
