It should just work

Is it possible you're on a work computer that has a firewall that is preventing connections?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Same here with MSN

Same here. But only with MSN...
AIM works just fine (havn't tested the other protocols)
Well. GAIM got all the rights in the firewall and Windows Messenger works just fine.

For the msn-messenger, try

For the msn-messenger, try putting the protocol to http in gaim. I had the same problem, but that helped. It's under the advanced options.

Didn't work

I tried but it didn't work.
But reading gaim's bugdatabase at sourceforge make it seem like a problem with gaim and not the portable version only.

Try using your /entire/

Try using your /entire/ e-mail address, eg. yourname@hotmail.com, and not just 'yourname' in the Screen Name field.

Is there an update on this?

I want to be able to use it but it won't let me, (same as others, tries to connect and fails)
Miranda works, as does trillium so it can't be a firewall issue

Ditto

Ditto to those. I haven't been able to test Miranda (I can't figure how the hell to use it) but GAIM 2.0 BETA nad the 1.x verison wont work.

How does this work exactly

Just on the off chance i'm doing something wrong

In the Add Account set up it says:

Screen Name
Password
Alias

So for Yahoo I'm guessing

Screen Name: techguyone
Password: *******
Alias: techguyone@yahoo.com

I really want this to work, and I can't understand how I can get every other IM known to man to work for me, but not Gaim

Funny thing.

Hello all....

I had the same problem in Gaim with only MSN. It wouldn't connect.... then i tried to change my login password to 8 characters (or less) and hey presto it worked!

Why i hear you ask?

On the Msn site it does say you need a password of at least 6 characters. I could log in to all the MSN sites with a longer password (15 characters), but gaim just wouldn't connect.

If you ever try the Normal "MSN Messenger" with longer passwords, i noticed that all the ******* in the password field get cut back to 8 characters (Hmmmmm. Might only be only visual....)..... so that is why i tried to change my password (using the internet site)and Gaim Worked flawlessly! It may be a one off. I have never seen this before.

Hope this helps!

Well I tried this with yahoo...

I changed my password to just 6 chars and ... nothing.

Why is Gaim proving to be such a waste of time for me.
Other IM's work just fine, all except the one that I want to use grrrrrrrrrrrrr
