i think, it uses a request on windows, to built connection... as nearly other programm... so you have to configure connection settings in internet explorer
Apps on my Portable Device:
Miranda, Firefox, Sunbird, Thunderbird, 7-Zip, FileZilla, GIMP, OOo, Sodoku and VLC

It should work...
What's your connection speed. It worked for me at 25KBs. Just set up your IM account(s) data.
