Feature Addition: Scanning multiple directories for apps, opinions sought

There have been a few requests over the years to have the PortableApps.com Platform scan additional paths for apps. The rationale is usually that users want to keep non-PAF apps separate from PAF apps or apps that are updated automatically by the platform separate from those that are not. I'm planning on implementing this within a future release of the PortableApps.com Platform and wanted to layout the setup and see if there are any comments or suggestions.

Please report any bugs you find with the platform here. There is a separate forum thread for localization discussion and another for apps that need an update. Bug reports made in comments will be deleted once added to this categorized list. Duplicate reports will be removed. Fixed bugs are listed in the PortableApps.com Platform Change-log.

Launch on Windows Startup

Submitted by lwc on April 19, 2024 - 4:11am

It seems the only official way to make the app launch on Windows Startup is to choose this option in the installation wizard.
If you didn't, you're screwed and have to do it manually, although it would seem belong to the Advanced settings.

Also, even if you choose "All users" during the installation, it puts it to start up only for the specific user that ran the installation.
This means all users will have it, but only 1 user will actually know and use it, is it on purpose?

What is the purpose of the Documents folder and Start.exe?

Submitted by lwc on April 19, 2024 - 4:08am

The app arrives as 2 folders and 1 file:

  1. Documents
  2. PortableApps
  3. Start.exe

To be honest, I've kept just the PortableApps subfolder as its own standalone folder, because I don't understand the purpose of the other folder and file. Start.exe seems like a shortcut to PortableApps\PortableApps.com\PortableAppsPlatform.exe although it's a real file that takes a couple of MB.

May I ask what is the purpose of them?

NSIS Error when trying to update PortableApps Platform to 29.4

Submitted by Avalanche369 on April 12, 2024 - 10:04am

Most posts I've looked at talk about individual apps getting an NSIS error, and the solution is usually to just reinstall the app. However, what do you do when the PortableApps launcher itself is getting a NSIS error? How do I reinstall PortableApps without losing my apps and settings?

Older Versions of Chrome failing to Install

Hey everyone, hope you are doing well. I am trying to currently download GoogleChromePortable64_74.0.3729.169_online.paf.exe but each time I try to run the installer I get this error. https://prnt.sc/UYnblD5WqW9X This is happening on pretty much any older version of chrome I try to install with the exception of the recent ones released in the last 6 months.

Next button breaks hours of selection

Submitted by Kimci on April 3, 2024 - 10:58pm

I selected 100 apps, pressed next and download started. That was a shock.
No way to pause or cancel. Being poor most of the downloads failed 6 hours later due to bandwidth congestion and thus the hours of selection (comparing last updated dates) were lost. YES this is a fault.

FAULT
[Next] should be renamed [Download] instead of simply hiding this information in the support page where it is too late for poor people. Tying up their net for hours with regets unless they reboot.
