New In Firefox 3.6

Firefox 3.6 is built on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, which has been under development since early 2009 and contains many improvements for web developers, add-on developers, and users. This version is also faster and more responsive than previous versions.

  • Support for a new type of theme called Personas, which allow users to change Firefox's appearance with a single click.
  • Protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse.
  • Open, native video can now be displayed full screen and supports poster frames.
  • Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness, and startup time.
  • The ability for web developers to indicate that scripts should run asynchronously to speed up page load times.
  • Continued support for downloadable web fonts using the new WOFF font format.
  • Support for new CSS attributes such as gradients, background sizing, and pointer events.
  • Support for new DOM and HTML5 specifications including the Drag & Drop API and the File API, which allow for more interactive web pages.
  • Changes to how third-party software can integrate with Firefox in order to prevent crashes.

Auto-Update Issue

If you allow Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition to auto-update, some non-personal files may remain on the local PC. This will be addressed in a later release.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Download

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is available for immediate download from the Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition homepage. You can get the German release from the German homepage and the other localized releases from the Localization page. Get it today!

It's a live download and the Alpha3 trunk was just closed (as they're finalizing 3.7 Alpha 3 now), so the trunk is now PreAlph4 instead, so old links are failing. I think it was changed today. This will always happen on dev builds like this during changeovers. The switch happens (without warning to us), the installer will fail to download (since it isn't there) and within a day or two, I update the installer to point to the new version (often when releasing the next Alpha).

For future issues, please drop a note in the forums, not as a comment in a news story.

UPDATE: I'm up anyway, so I went ahead and updated it now.

Thanks for the speedy updating of the Minefield DL link!! You are AWESOME!!...

...Now, can you give me the link to the forum? The INDEX/Starting Point page...then which link under the INDEX page should I click?

Thanks, John!

SO what are the important selling points of Minefield? AND when is it due?

What about portableapps.com SUITE 2.0 (HINT: you wanna be Awesome a second time) ?

EDIT: would this be the link: https://portableapps.com/forums ? Then click on Firefox?

I download the .paf file, which I install on my thumb drive, and the C hard drive, as well, as a double check. Although the button says Firefox3.6.3, as well as the .paf file, Help|About Firefox says: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.2) Gecko/20100316 Firefox/3.6.2.
The portable firefox.exe says that it is version 1.6.6.0, in both the C and G(thumb) drives. Is 1.6.6 equivalent to Firefox3.6.3, or what?

I just double-checked and it's working fine. Most likely you're accidentally launching a local install of it. Or you have a misbehaving extension messing it up.

The version of FirefoxPortable.exe is the version of the launcher, not Firefox. There is no connection between them. The version of Firefox Portable is contained within FirefoxPortable\App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini.

If you have additional issues, please post a note in the forums, not as a comment on a news story. That way we can support you better.

the 1.6.6.6 should be firefoxportable.exe. This is the version of the launcher for firefox portable. Don't worry, firefox is 3.6.3.

I am looking at the Help|About Firefox, which, usually, tells me the portable equivalent to Firefox. So, the portable equivalent which says 3.6.2, is, actually 3.6.3?
I was asking a question. I have no idea what the previous reply was saying. If this is not the right place, I will have to try somewhere else.

Please post a note with complete details in the support forum here:

What you're posting to right now is a news announcement, not a support thread, so most folks who do support won't see it. And anyone looking later with the same issue will never be able to find it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Never mind. I reinstalled with the same .paf file, in the same folder, and, it reads 3.6.3, i.e. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3.
As for news announcement or no, I may not aunderstand the purpose of this newsgroup.

And what when it doesn't detect a previous install - can you just install in the same directory?

Just install the new one over the old one. All your settings will be preserved.
