Pidgin logoPidgin Portable 2.6.6 has been released. Pidgin Portable is a versatile instant messaging client packaged as a portable app, so you can take your IM settings and buddy lists with you. It has all the same great features as Pidgin, including support for AOL, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and Jabber networks, but there's nothing to install on the local PC. This new release updates Pidgin to the latest version. Improved installers for Pidgin-Encryption and Pidgin-OTR have also been released. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.

Read on for more details...

Features

Pigdin Portable ScreenshotPidgin Portable is a multi-protocol instant messaging client that works with AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! and more. You can log into multiple networks all with the same program. All your IM settings and buddy lists are self-contained, so it leaves no personal information behind on the machine you run it on. Learn more about Pidgin...

Pidgin Portable supports the two most popular encryption plugins for Pidgin. Both are packaged as portable installers that automatically work with Pidgin Portable. You can install Pidgin-Encryption 3.0 and/or Pidgin-OTR 3.2 and communicate securely with other users.

New In This Release

This new release updates Pidgin to 2.6.6 (change log).

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Pidgin Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

I upgraded to this version and seem to have lost my Facebook plugin.

My Facebook account is still listed but is shown as "unknown" and If I edit it, the Facebook protocol is no longer in the list of those available.

Regards

Nick

To add a couple of things to the information in the link John gives above:

1. It looks like the Facebook plugin doesn't work anyway with the latest version. This may be deliberate or simply the result of incompatibility.

2. If you want to remove the plugin (I don't imagine this is really necessary, but if you want to be on the safe side) then (whilst Pidgin is not running) delete:

PortableApps\PidginPortable\App\Pidgin\plugins\libfacebook-1.64.dll

There are also a few Facebook icons in sub-folders of PortableApps\PidginPortable\App\Pidgin\pixmaps\pidgin\protocols\ but I don't see any real point in removing those.

3. When following the instructions to set up Facebook chat via XMPP using the above linked instructions:

a. Your Facebook username must be the actual username you created (and if you haven't yet, you'll need to create one). You can't use an email address (as you can when logging into FB via your browser).

b. On the "Basic" tab, it looks as though you do need to put "Home" in the resource field - as shown in the screenshot but not mentioned explicitly in the instructions.

c. On the "Advanced" tab you need to remove "proxy.jabber.org" from the File transfer proxies field - the screenshot is confusing because it shows this still in place but doesn't show "chat.facebook.com" in the Connect server field (which you DO need).

Thought this might save folks some of the trial-and-error that I went through to get it working.

Nick

Under 3b above, Facebook suggest you should put "pidgin" rather than "Home". I wonder if it actually makes any difference what you put in.

Under 3c above, Pidgin seems to put the default of "proxy.jabber.org" back in, according to its whim. Again I'm not convinced it matters whether it's there or not.

Regards

Nick

I know this is an announcement, but for anyone that ever used the Facebook plugin, the reason it doesn't continue to work is there's a lib-json.dll that is put in the /App/Pidgin/ folder that is required to work. This isn't preserved when Pidgin Portable is installed which renders Facebook useless.

As John said though, just use Jabber as Facebook finally supports it.

It was supported in an older version of the Facebook plugin (see installer.ini's line PreserveFile1=App\Pidgin\libjson-glib-1.0.dll) but it looks like they went and changed the file name for some strange reason. Either way, it's moot as the plugin is no longer necessary.

Yo pude usarlo y parece que anda bien.

I could use it and it seems wrong.

Does anyone had the same effect that the "installed" themes are deleted after update?
I recognise it on update from 2.6.5 to 2.6.6.

Where did you install them? If it's in App there may not be an exception to cope with this which may need to be added.

(When you report back please create a new thread in the support forum rather than continuing it in the release page.)

usually GTK themes get screwed up upon upgrade. Its a file called gtkrc which the installer doesn't recognize as a file, but as a folder (I guess). The end result is that GTK themes are always trashed upon upgrade, new install etc.

There's a way around it in GeanyPortable, but I don't really like. The method is that we preserve the folder the gtkrc file is located in. But really, I should only preserve that single file.

Thanks for you reply Chris and Oliver.
Next time I will use the forum.

I'm new with Pidgin since I changed from miranda to Pidgin 2.6.5

I put them in "PortableApps\PidginPortable\App\GTK\share\themes"
My fault... with taking a look exactly to what I did I would recognise why they are deleted cos they are not in the /Data folder.

Is it possible to store them in the /Data folder and the settings will be saved as well?

OliverK's picture

I don't think so. Really, the installer just needs to support GTK better (or be coded to support it better.)

Is there any possibility that PortableApps would also considering to develop Portable Digsby? Thank you.

Hi, I'd strongly suggest that you use the search feature on the site before posting, since there are at least 4 or 5 threads already regarding this.

There was a dat versions from McAfee last week that had a large number of false positives detected by it. The fix / workaround is to update your AV software to the current version, which correctly doesn't identify pidgin portable as malware.

John T. Haller's picture

As always, the problem is McAfee's, so please report it to them. They've been having a lot of issues lately and even their online false positive report system has been broken for over a week. McAfee has had multiple false positives in multiple packages over the past week. It's like their definitions went nuts.

This was already fixed once in a recent update. Please verify you have their latest definitions. In the future, please first verify with another antivirus to rule out a false-positive. Then report it to your antivirus vendor. If it is a major one, report it in the forums (not as comments on a news story, where it will get lost). You can do all this online:
https://portableapps.com/support#false_positive

And remember that the issue is entirely McAfee's error. There is nothing we can do to fix it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

... Thanks, Jimbo & John,
You are both right about this False Positive.

Sorry, i didnt search enough or wasnt aware of it Sad

checked McAfee Enterprise ... virus definition 5916.0000 (Mar 10, 2K10) identified this exe file & my other VNC related files as Malware/Trojan.

Updated to 5923.0000 (Mar 17, 2K10) ... wala ... Now its fine Biggrin
