New In PortableApps.com Platform 1.6.1

  • Fix for showing and hiding the menu so it better hides in one click
  • Updated translations

New In PortableApps.com Platform 1.6

The PortableApps.com Platform 1.6 release adds lots of new features including:

  • Favorites / Pin to Top - If you use a lot of portable apps, you can now pin your favorite apps to the top of the menu, making everything quicker to navigate. Just right-click and check off Favorite.
  • Integrated Eject - The eject button will automatically have Windows eject your device if nothing is locking it open.
  • Autorun Apps - You can now have apps automatically run when the menu loads. Just right-click on an app and select Automatically Start.
  • Uninstall Apps - You can now right-click on an app and select to uninstall it. It will remove the whole app directory after a confirmation/warning screen.
  • Run / Run As Admin - Apps can be run or run as administrator from the right-click menu.
  • Multimonitor Support - The menu's additional forms now properly appear on PCs with 2 or 4 displays
  • Check Drive for Errors - Check your portable device for errors with just a click in the Options menu
  • Windows 7 Taskbar - On Windows 7, the menu icon will appear on the taskbar in addition to the system tray (which is hidden by default). This can be disabled with an INI setting.
  • 120dpi Support / Missing Icons Fixed - The whole menu now properly supports 120dpi in Vista and Windows 7. There will be some visual artifacting (as with nearly all apps at 120dpi) but otherwise it all works as expected.
  • Transparency - You can now set the transparency of the whole menu from 0% to 90% directly from the Options menu.

  • Better App Hiding - App hiding is now accomplished by right-clicking and then selecting Hide. The app is hidden instantly without the app list being reloaded as it is in 1.5.
  • App Unhiding - You can unhide apps within the menu by right-clicking and selecting to Show Hidden Icons. Icons that are hidden are then show with a line through them. You can hide and unhide icons as you wish and then hide them again.
  • App Load Progress Bar / Faster Menu Load - The menu will now load much faster and will then show a progress bar indicating how long it will take before it is done detecting all your apps.
  • Improved Wine Support - The menu will now load a square theme on Wine and avoid the pink edges that appear. (A fix for the app icons loading without all colors is being worked on)
  • Better Icon Refresh (and F5) - When refreshing the app icons, you'll get the same progress bar as when the icon first loads. You can refresh by selecting it from the Options popup menu, by right-clicking an icon in the app list and selecting Refresh or by just clicking F5.
  • Hide Desktop Icons - The menu can hide the PC's desktop icons using a selection in the Options menu
  • Visual Changes - The menu no longer uses bold fonts and has the start of font switching which will let it use Tahoma on Windows XP and earlier and Segoe UI on Vista and later to better fit with the rest of the interface.
  • Better Multilingual Support - The Platform now supports 51 languages and has a 58 language installer making it easy for everyone to install and use.
  • And more...

If you're upgrading, it will automatically detect your existing install. Is this superior to 2.0 beta 4, or is it firmly in the 1.6 line? I didn't see theme support listed, and while I'm not trying to look a gift horse in the mouth, I do love my green theme (well, the one that comes with 2.0 beta 4, with 10% or 20% transparency (depending on the computer) it's beautiful.

That said, congratulations on the release and moving forward.

Indeed, what I saw of it when I downloaded it last night it just seems like bug fixes.

It's a 1.6 bugfix release (bug which are already fixed in the 2.0 Beta 4 release) along with some slightly updated translations from after 2.0 Beta 4. So it doesn't have theme support. If you have 2.0, stick with that for now.

I find 2.0 beta 4 works fine. I have been using it for ages.

Greetings folks...

Congrats on the new 1.6.1 platform!! As usual, great job!

Minor question: Should I install 1.6.1 over 2.0 beta 4, or stick with 2.0 beta 4 until the official 2.0 line is released?

THANKS for all of your hard work!

I guess if you are releasing 1.6.1, then the 2.0 platform is not coming any time soon. Those bug fixes aren't anything critical, so if 2.0 was imminent, you would have rolled them into that.

I think probably this is just the last release with Windows 98/ME support!
As 2.0 is going to be supporting unicode.

These bug fixes are already in 2.0 Beta 4. And the language updates will be in 2.0 Beta 5. We promised the 1.6.1 update to fix the final issues with 1.6 and give a solid final release with Windows 95/98/Me support, which is now done.

Not really a flood warning. And who can predict the weather REALLY, anyway?

Trickle down theory maybe? Heck my mom always said that little boys who lie grow up to be weathermen. Wink

Since the "This week" was posted at the end of last week, I just assumed it meant the coming week. As in Monday thru Friday. As in, the first week of June.

If the new Format is finalized and the apps in the 1.6.1 suite have the new Format, at the least, we should get those apps individually, even if the source app hasn't been updated. Like Firefox, we might get a or we might just get a 3.6.3 reissue.

Also, we've got announcements before which did not bring releases. Once you've been here a while you come to expect it. It is what it is and most of us are fine with that.

I posted the announcement and had meant 7 days. I spose I should have clarified that. The Format and apps were due to drop today (part of my 3 day work weekend) but will tomorrow due to one final interaction with the updater that needed squashing. The apps have been ready for the update (as they are also included in the suite), it's just been the installer 2.0 holding things back.

John, my comment was supposed to be lighthearted and not meant at you or anyone.

Just wanted to clarify.

Hello Developers,

would you like to write this application in unicode in order to use Russian on the German and English "Windows" as well? I have the German Windows and can't use this program with Russian interface.

I collected many potable programs. So I can't quickly find the application, I need, if I'm using this suite. Could you do it possible to collect the application links in groups like 'pstart.exe' with 2-3 levels?

Best Regards

Unicode support is coming in the next release (see the link in the article to "Ending Windows 95/98/Me support"). Categories are also coming in with 2.0 (search around and you'll find lots of mentions of it).
