DamnVid Portable 1.6.0 has been released. DamnVid is a cross-platform application to download and convert videos from your hard drive or from dozens of video sharing websites like YouTube, Dailymotion, Veoh, Metacafe, etc. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.
Features
- DamnVid is a video converter, first and foremost. It makes use of the wonderful FFmpeg library, used in other software like VLC Media Player or Google Chrome.
- A video downloader. While DamnVid can convert local video files just fine, it can also download video streams from most video sharing websites. But what gives it the edge over other video downloaders and converters is that not only it does both the downloading and the converting, but it does them at the same time: it converts as it downloads, making the whole process much faster.
- DamnVid has a built-in Youtube video search. Search and download directly from within the app!
- It sucks less!

This app is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. Why the non-portable version for you home machine?
I think this could be a useful addition to PortableApps. Video conversion is generally a weak area for quality free apps.
Shame about the name though, it doesn't really present itself as a serious application. Having said that, I've learned to ignore app names and focus on the quality of the application itself.

Comparison to SUPER
Other than the ability to download online video, does anyone know how is it compared to SUPER, the freeware which webpage forces you to disable your ad blocker in order to download the app?

Is it in the title of this application? It is the first four letters is a bad word? What will happen if there are young users see this title and use the word? What will it happen?
Depends
A small subset of the population may see it that way. I grew up with it being just another word (ie, not a "4-letter word" swear). It's not considered taboo in general society here in the states anymore. It may be in the midwest, however.

The four-letter swear word is rarely used where I live (ironically) but when used it is just another word. In NE Texas where I live, in this day and age, it is believed that swearing just shows that you are uneducated, here however the Software's name might be shrugged off or might give someone a chuckle.
Anyways, "D-word"Vid is an excellent addition and I have also installed it on my host machine, and started using it right away.

I guess we should just be thankful it's not called f*@%vid.
As I mentioned above, I'm not so much offended, I just think it's a poor name choice (not "professional" etc etc.), but that really is irrelevant in practical terms. It sort of reminds me of ccleaner, which I guess dropped it's first word at some point in favor of just the initial letter. As long as it does what it supposed to. So many free video transcoders promise much but deliver little in my experience, so if it gets the job done then that counts for a lot.
Didn't Even Occur
To be honest, it didn't even occur to me. Damn is just a normal word used in everyday conversation in tech, business and socially. It didn't even cross my mind that it may be inappropriate as an app title.

most people should know enough about portable apps and disable it but maybe it could be disabled?

It's actually highly unadvised to not check for updates. The module updates are very pertinent, especially for the Youtube module, and they don't break portability. As for the app update check, it just points you to the project's Google Code page, where you can download and install the update. Since this app is hosted both here at PortableApps.com and at their Google Code project, the updater should never cause an issue.

Absolutely useles program. It can't use proxy, it can't recover after canceling connection, it even can't quit properly. I need tool like this but it's not DV.

Actually I agree to some degree with the previous responder although I wouldn't use the term "absolutely".
As far as I can see this program is nothing more or less than a certain type of shell around a few rules with pre-programmed sites of which the program knows how to extract a video from. As soon as the siteowner changes the system this program will not work anymore. Especially Youtube is known for its frequent changes.
And then the program is really "useless" for that matter.
I've tested this program by pointing it to a site it didn't know about. The program indicated it couldn't find a video. Okay, fair enough, the author didn't claim the program should work with every site. So I did a new test. This time I pointed the program to a direct URL of a video (so it should detect the video).
To my astonishment the program again indicated that it could not find a video.
I cannot draw another conclusion than that this program lacks any form of intelligent behaviour and that it just is not able to detect what is and what is not a video but that it only can apply a few pre-programmed tricks.
There are more than enough addons to browsers (for example Firefox) that can do the trick. In my opinion the added value of this program is at best marginal.
Unfortunate choice of product name
This looks like an excellent application, but like the majority of families in American culture, we don't condone the use of profanity and would not load an app onto our kids' PC with a product name as poorly chosen as this one.

Whether or not the name is
Whether or not the name is poor is in the eye of the beholder. I can agree with one's values on profanity, but it's a bit of an odd subject to handle because you'll never be able to filter it all. IMO it's best to teach kids what is appropriate and what isn't, how/why, and why it really means. Not saying you should teach them the words, but they're better off being educated on the subject than thrown into a world where the language is mainstream and not understanding what is going on.
In my experiences with friends/acquaintances from school, those who were sheltered when it came to profanity/sexuality/etc were usually the ones who got in trouble with it later in life. Either through innocent lack of knowledge or for rebellious reasons.
quite odd it doesn't work for me
i tried over and over but i can't download videos off youtube i can download the audio but that seems to be it. also the cancel button doesn't work
