Mozilla Firefox for U3 Synchro

Submitted by BryanRH on December 27, 2006 - 3:03pm

I just got a U3 Cruzer 2GB Flash Drive. I downloaded Mozilla Firefox for U3. I already have and use Firefox on my PC.
Is there a way to Synchronize my Local(PC)Firefox [including bookmarks, prefs, and extensions,] with my new Firefox for U3? and vice versa.
I know the website says to transfer the appropriate files but I can't find all of the right files. At least not where they should be.

U3 Apps - What happens if allowed to automatically update?

Submitted by Neale Hind on December 20, 2006 - 9:59am

I have all the U3 apps from this site installed to my SanDisk Cruzer. If I leave "Automatically check for updates" on, the apps come up with available updates.

I switch off the automatic update checks as I presume they will not be U3 versions.

I did wonder though if (say) allowing U3 FF 1.5.0.7 to update to 1.5.0.9 would still result in a U3 app - or would it become a normal Portable App?

What experiences have others had of this?

If not Avast, which AV solution?

Submitted by phiwinuk on December 15, 2006 - 5:20pm

Have just got a 1Gb Sandisk Cruzer U3 USB drive. This comes with a 3 month trial of Avast AV. I've installed PortableApps (great stuff thanks) but have just been reading some of the posts about the Avast problems.

I must admit that Avast had sounded more attractive (& useful?) than ClamWin. Auto updating of virus definitions, real time AV scanning. But now concerned about the problems people have experienced. It's too early for me to comment on how it works, but what else would you recommend? I don't mind paying for an AV solution if it's good. On my PC I use AVG, but what will work well on a USB drive?

Firefox doesn't open dynamical html-files anymore: "unnamed.html could not be opened"

Submitted by klaymen on December 14, 2006 - 2:31am

Hi all,

I got a problem that is probably related to the firefox U3 application, but possibly also a general firefox problem. But I suspect the origin lies in the U3 version.

I'm using Firefox U3 portable (version 1.5.0.8 ) for some time now, at home and in the office, without much trouble. But 2 weeks ago a pecular problem started: Whenever a html link leads to a html file via a dynamic link, like a php script that's returning html content, firefox pops up a dialog box whether to store the file or open it using an executable (which is normal behaviour). Usually I just open it using the default executable, which is firefox. Internally, the html file is stored to a file "unnamed.html" in the temp directory. But since 2 weeks this mechanism doesn't work properly anymore, I get a dialog box "...\unnamed.html could not be opened, because an unknown error occured. Try saving to disk first and then opening the file." afterwards. The file unnamed.html was created though, and I can drag it to the browser (that is, before I close the warning dialog, because it will be removed automatically otherwise). I also run sysinternals filemon in parallel and observed that all files were created (first a randomized xyz.html that was then renamed to unnamed.html), but this file was never actually read by any program. Note that this doesn't happen with normal html links, only with calls to server-side scripts that happen to return html files (often the case with file attachments to mails on hotmail and similar).

Avast & TBP & FFP

Submitted by Miles on December 11, 2006 - 9:30am

Using Sandisk U3 and TBP & FFP, not U3 versions. While in Thailand for a month found many many public computers which were infected with win32/Brontok.A worm. This resulted in auto name change of several files.

Now cannot open TBP, and cannot open many mail files in FFP. Running TBP on the desktop, NOD32 detects the worm plus I cannot open several msg files. In essence have lost several msgs that needed to be kept. And FFP was rendered useless for the last week of the trip.

This was caused when Avast detected the worm and changed a file name before I could save a file under another name (perhaps it was already infected from a prior computer, so that wouldn't do any good anyway!). Actually, the worm was detected the moment the thumb drive was plugged in and Avast ran, so don't know why/how the infections occurred since I quickly removed the drive -- even if I wasn't able to turn it off.

portable apps stopped opening

Submitted by LarryHBNW on December 5, 2006 - 7:16pm

As a new portable apps user I am excited about the possibilities, but am probably my own worst enemy right now. Things had been working fine, then I started getting error messages when closing out and ejecting...it said some apps were still open but I'm sure everything was closed. That got more frequent, then it started locking up my XP system when I plugged it in...everything froze...had to hold my start button in to shut down, pull out, and reboot. Now the U3 icon that used to show up when I plugged in does not, and none of the U3 apps will open.
Which foot did I shoot ? Any suggestions p
