U3 Apps (Discontinued)

Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org for U3 by PortableApps.com

What exactly makes a U3 drive a U3 drive?

Submitted by MrChris on July 12, 2006 - 2:11am

OK After playing around and reading a crap load of info on U3 and what not, I am left with the same question. What exactly makes a U3 USB drive really that much different than an ordinary USB Flash drive besides the fact that the U3 drive is/was partitioned into 2 separate file systems one of which is a CDFS and the a FAT partition.

I know that most standard USB Flash Drives can not be partitioned into more than one partition, but even that can be gotten around.

A lot of people say its Hardware that makes a U3 drive different. I kinda beg to differ. I mean granit Firmware is kinda a combo of both hardware and software together.

PDFs Kill Firefox

Submitted by Bulldog on July 11, 2006 - 11:26am

[Firefox 1.5.0.4 for U3 running on Windows XP SP 2]

Every time a PDF opens in the browser, Firefox freezes. Nothing is clickable. Eventually Firefox dies ("...is not responding.") and has to be killed through Task Manager. Anyway around this? As it is, if I'm sharp enough to notice that a link is a PDF I open it in Internet Explorer. But I want to use Firefox.

Why U3?

Argh, I just bought a U3 Kingston 1GB USB Thumbdrive and I'm very pissed off with it after having found this site and reading through the forum. Should have gotten a cheaper one with much faster speed.

1)I would just like to know what is the difference between a U3 and non-U3?
At first I thought u3 has at least the advantage of U3 Launcher but later I found out that Portable Apps also has pstart. (what I meant is a menu to open applications)

2)Does it mean that only U3-thumb drive can autorun whereas non-U3 thumb drive cant? (Using autorun.inf)

3)Does U3-thumb drive install anything whenever I plug my USB into a computer in my uni?

Converting Portable apps to run in the U3 launcher

Sandisk kindly installed Skype for me on their Cruzer Micro. However it is out of date and I asked them how to upgrade it.

I got a poor response from them (see bottom of this post).

I have installed PortableSkype provided by Rob Loach. Is there away to make PortableSkype appear in the U3 launcher? John Haller's Portable Firefox and Thunderbird work wonderfully. Just want to make Portable Skype appear on the launcher to save groping around.

PFF for U3 Writes to the Registry...4 Times

Submitted by Bulldog on June 30, 2006 - 11:32am

[Using - and enjoying - PFF for U3 on Windows XP. PFF is installed on my USB drive.]

I'm a limited user on my computer at work. Each time I start PFF I get 4 separate warnings that "Registry editing has been disabled by your Administrator." I've taught myself to rapidly click Enter 4 times to clear the messages but that's getting kind of old. Does PFF really need to write to the registry? PFF seems to work just fine even though it can't write to the registry. Can I stop it from trying to fo so?

Verbatim U3 update

Submitted by azjerry on June 26, 2006 - 9:36pm

I emailed Verbatim support about the availability of an update for my U3 drive as the launcher doesn't have the update option and the launcher is much older than the Kingston I have. Their answer:

----
There is currently no update available.

When an update to the launchpad is available, it will be posted on the Verbatim website, along with instructions on how to update your firmware if possible.

Depending on the nature of the update, it may or may not be possible to field upgrade.

U3 drives

Submitted by misterdan on June 24, 2006 - 3:46pm

How do I get my U3 drive to recognize Portable Firefox, I currently have the firefox from the U3 website (the one with the .u3p extension). If I extract P.F. to my flash drive under the apps folder it does not show up under the application listing.

How do I get P.F. to show up under the app listing I recieve when clicking on the U3 icon in the taskbar? And recieve the normal options avaliable for .u3p programs?

Does someone have an updated u3p I can install to my flash drive?

Thanks,
dan
