Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org for U3 by PortableApps.com

Am I Missing Something?

Submitted by Maineman on April 29, 2006 - 1:39am

I have been using a few Portable Apps for quite some time now on a non-U3 512MB PNY memory stick. I travel with this and use it, generally, on Administrator restricted computers. Mostly I use Portable Firefox, and Portable VLC Media Player. I have read a lot about U3 and heard a lot about it on many radio shows bu I cannot figure out for the life of me what it is all about and what it offers that I do not have now withe the Portable Apps I now use, or plan to install in the future.

I am reasonably computer literate, though certainly not an expert. Perhaps I am more of an idiot than I though, but can someone please post a bit more info (maybe a basic FAQ) on what U3 is and what it has to offer over what I already have?

Questions of a NewBie

Could someone please help my understanding...

- Normally the U3-compatible files I download come with the extension *.u3p
- What are files with the *.u3i extension?

- and how do I manage to get programs going that should be U3-ready but do come in ZIPped format?

I've tried to copy ABIword to my U3-stick as indicated in the helpfiles but it will not show up in launchpad...!?

any advice? Thanks in advance.

Firefox and the redirected home folder

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on April 27, 2006 - 9:24am

Hey John,
So I love the U3 Firefox and Thunderbird, but the redirecting of the home directory to my U3 drive really drives my crazy sometimes.. When I download a file into My Documents it puts it into the U3 drive My Documents for instance. When I install program, they put their application data in the U3 Application Data folder.

While this could be conceptually cool it can also be rather annoying as I use my U3 drive at work and it really messes with the computer.

Is there any way to make this an option?

Thanks!

How to install PortableApps on U3 flash drive?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on April 14, 2006 - 1:15pm

Just ordered a 1Gb extreMemory U3 flash drive that comes with pre-loaded software (Thunderbird, Migo and U Safe).
From a rapid browse of this site, i understand U3 slows down performance of drive. If that so, can i load PortableApps "outside" of the U3 platform(?) so that these will run faster?
(Btw cool, uncluttered site with some great work. Congrats John(?))

Size on disk - - Hidden files

Submitted by wsm23 on April 11, 2006 - 10:02am

I have a U3 Geeksquad 512mb stick.

I have found some interesting attributes.

When I look at applications/files/folders in some files I find that the file size is different than the size on disk. Sometimes it is as much as twice the size.

Is this a U3 thing?

Also how can I view hidden files?
I have already used the windows explorer settings to show hidden files/folders.

When I look at a folders properties and it shows 3mb's worth of files in the folder, the open folder may only have 1mb or no files showing at all.

I am trying to keep the U3 profile folders clean.

U3 versions

Would it be possible to get a U3 compatible version of the portable apps here, such as portableNVU and sunbird? I have the portable version of them running already, but it would be nice to have them running within the U3 interface.

Clearing Private Data

Submitted by wsm23 on March 3, 2006 - 4:41pm

My U3 files seem to be swelling again.

I am using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1 - Build ID: 2006011112 for U3 by John T Haller.

Will Clear Private Data help with the file sizes?

I also peeked at the x:\Documents\U3UserProfile\Local Settings\Application Data folder and that contains 32mb of info.

Folders:

{3248F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0150030}=10.8mb
Which contains a JRE installer file

Apple Computer=20.0mb

Adobe=11.2kb

Identities=221kb

Microsoft=1.42mb

Cannot download files

I'm using the latest version of portable firefox on a Memorex u3 256meg. Works fine on the xp computers at school, but when I try to run it on win2000 pro at home I'm not able to download any files. "Save picture as," "save link as" etc. all give me a split second of hourglass, then nothing. This feature works fine in regular firefox and IE on the same machine. is this just a 2000 bug, or am I doing something wrong?
