Eraser logoEraser Portable 5.8.8.1 has been released. Eraser Portable is a secure data removal tool that can completely remove files from most media. This release fixes an issue with portablization on Windows XP and has an improved launcher and installer. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. And it's open source and completely free.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

Eraser Portable Screenshot Eraser Portable is a secure file-deletion and data wiping utility. With support for multiple wipes, pattern writing and more, it can be used to securely delete any sensitive data. Learn more about Eraser...

Flash Drive Note: Most modern flash drives use wear leveling to spread write operations out over a device. This interferes with Eraser (and other secure deletion utilities) ability to wipe single files. Wiping an entire drive or erasing a file and then wiping free space should still work securely, though it will put additional wear on your drive.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Eraser Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Platform including the Menu and Backup Utility.

The updater database's checksum didn't match the file. I've reuploaded and reset it on the updater and app page to ensure they all match. It should be working again in about 15 minutes.

Because from 6.x onwards, it requires the .NET framework which can be tricky in regards to portable apps and availability on XP.

It's not tricky, it's just not considered portable because of the .NET issue. We'll have it available as Eraser.NET or Eraser Pro soon.

The erasing preferences are not saved. Only the general preferences are saved. The erasing preferences are in %windir%\eraser.ini. This portable version now deletes %windir%\eraser.ini when it closes but it still doesn't save it to the portable location. Shouldn't it save it to the portable location before deleting it and then copy it to %windir% on the next launch?

WINDIR is nearly always unwritable so it would fail. And Eraser is buggy and doesn't properly read the saved setting later on most PCs, anyway.
