How to make XBMC run as portable from Apps Menu

Submitted by DaveI on July 12, 2014 - 12:14am

OK...I've got XBMC running totally portable
from a USB stick...I can execute it from a
.bat or .cmd file using the xbmc -p portable switch
and all my adddons/setup have been transferred from
the hidden folder users\userfolder\AppData\Roaming\XBMC...
Everything works great...But I'll be d*mned if I can
get it to run from the PortableApps menu...I tried
converting the .bat file to an .exe file using several
utilities but it comes up with a not recognized internal
or external command when running it (Doesn't do that when running from

Some apps denied access to temp folder

Submitted by jbass350z on July 7, 2014 - 12:42pm

I have a strange problem. I run a lot of portable apps on my work laptop which I do not have admin rights on. Portables have worked fine this way for years.

Today I came in and there were some issues with the local network and I reset my Windows password, and now many of the portable apps will not start, giving me the following error:

NSIS Error

Error writing temporary file. Make sure your temp folder is valid.

The temp folder is fine. I can write to it and many programs work fine and read/write from it. However a few do not.

Is there any way to not have a flashdrive with portableapps not be named 'PortableApps.com'

Submitted by gollark8 on July 6, 2014 - 2:17am

I recently installed PortableApps on my 32GB USB3 Integral flashdrive and found that it renamed the drive to 'PortableApps.com' and the 'Rename' button in windows explorer wasn't working with it.
Is there any way to stop it doing this?

Which is your favorite file manager and why?

Xenon seems to be [an] interesting [one man project by John?]; unfortunately it seems to be abandoned. Basic Tab keyboard shortcut does not work at least. I like it being minimalistic.

I very much would like to ditch Total Commander for good, tried all the 3 browsers I could find in the list (not the 2-panel ones; I want to ditch the 2-panel style as well) still, I guess these may need a lot (and I mean A LOT) of customization just to be as functional as total commander in its basic form. Sad, as I'd very much like to ditch it, with it's 2 panels...

So, your favs?

i really like what they have. but am wondering if there are other alternatives. i like that i just double click on the start.exe and i am up and running in my familiar background and icons. the only thing they could do now is ad a autostart of portable apps. i am running the unsecured version i just want to see it in action then go after the secured version.

i use a 1tb usb desktop hard drive. i do not want to boot from this device.
i do not want a virtual environment. usually to much overhead on the laptops and desktops i use.

Updating multiple copies of a portable app

Submitted by 3 cheers 4 JT Haller on July 3, 2014 - 11:48am

Hi folks,

I have multiple copies of several apps, each with different folders/configs, e.g.
C:PortableApps/Firefox v1
C:PortableApps/Firefox v2

I do want to keep these as entirely separate apps rather than just adding a new profile into, say, the Firefox v1 folder.

To date, I have been updating these manually as from what I could see, the PortableApps.com Platform only updates a single instance of each app.

Am I missing something? Is it possible to update multiple instances of the same app? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for any help.
