Submitted by John T. Haller on February 13, 2008 - 4:18am

Firefox logoMozilla Firefox®, Portable Edition 3 Beta 3 has been released. It's the second beta of the upcoming Mozilla Firefox 3 web browser bundled with a PortableApps.com launcher as a portable app, so you can take your browser, bookmarks, settings and extensions on the go. It's also a great way to test out all the new features of 3.0 without affecting your existing Firefox installation. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.

Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 3

Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 3 is the third test release of the upcoming 3.0 version of Firefox. With tons of new features, security enhancements, performance upgrades and more, it's one of the most widely-anticipated releases this year. And, thanks to the PortableApps.com packaging, you can try out all the new features without impacting your locally-installed copy of Firefox. For more on what's new, read the Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 3 Release Notes.

Minor Update With Revision 2

A minor bug in the first revision of Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 3 Beta 3 prevented the What's New page from showing on first launch. This was corrected in revision 2 to ensure that all users would have the opportunity to participate in the beta testing community. If you have Revision 1, upgrading is not completely necessary.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Revision 2 Minor Update

There was a small bug in the original release that prevented the What's New screen from showing on first launch. As this is a part of the Firefox beta experience, a quick update to revision 2 was posted to correct this.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thank you

Very fast work on this one.

WOW!!

Just saw this at LifeHacker, came over here, and you've got it!!

So far so good. Was

So far so good. Was wondering if PA would be getting this.

Test mostly Successful

John:
For the most part I like the Beta 3 of Firefox, especially the "smart bookmarks." The only problem I have had with it (more of a Firefox issue than a portability issue) is while accessing a PDF document on one site. The Beta 3 firefox timed out while attempting to load the document and view it on the screen, whereas Internet Explorer was able to link with Acrobat and display the document.
Other than that it appears to work seamlessly.

I generally prefer to go

I generally prefer to go into Tools | Options | Content and either remove the PDF extension from the list or configure it to use a particular program. I find that I get a much better "experience" reading PDF files in a PDF reader instead of crammed into a browser page. Not that I like PDF files anyway, but when I have to, I'd rather they be in a reader.

I'd guess one could configure FF to load SumatraPDFPortable as the external reader.

Good Idea

Rab -
The idea of configuring FF to load SumatraPDF as the default external reader is a good one (keeps everything on the flash drive). I'll see how that works out and report back.

Bookmark issue

I added a new folder under the bookmarks tab and later I could not delete it. Upon restarting my computer the new folder that I wished to delete previously was now gone.

Another issue that I noticed is after I create a new folder I can not drag and drop bookmarked web pages into the new folder.

Tom

Worked - painlessly

I went into Tools/Options/Applications and modified the calls to PDF files so that they now call on Sumatra PDF on the flash drive.
Relatively painless to adapt Firefox "auxiliary" programs for total portable operation.
