Google Chrome Portable 3.0.195.27 Revision 2 has been released. Google Chrome Portable is a web browser that runs web pages and applications with lightning speed. It's designed to be simple and stylish. This new release fixes some issues with theme portability and bookmark loss that were affecting some users due to Chrome temporarily copying the profile to the local PC by default due to a launcher bug. All users are encouraged to upgrade. It's packaged as a portable app, so you can take your browsing experience with you and it's in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. It's partially open source freeware for personal and business use.
Features
Google Chrome's features include:
- Quick to start up
- Loads web pages in a snap
- Runs web applications faster than ever
- Designed for efficiency and ease of use
- Search and navigate to web pages from the same box
- Arrange and organize tabs however you wish — quickly and easily
- Get to your favorite websites with just a click, from the thumbnails of your most visited sites in the New Tab page
- Themes to add delight to your browser
What's New In This Release
This release fixes an issue causing bookmark and settings loss for some users. It also enhances theme portability. Your profile is no longer copied locally (due to a bug in the launcher) by default, but can be set to do so by copying the INI from Other\Source to the GoogleChromePortable directory and editing it).
PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format
Google Chrome Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

What exactly changed in this
What exactly changed in this release? The first 3.0 release was really speedy, even on my slow 32GB Cruzer. The new release causes all my apps (including Chrome itself!) to grind to a near halt within a couple minutes of launching it.
For now, I'll go back to "Revision 1".
Local
You can set your profile to CopyLocally to speed it up. This was stuck on in the initial launch. It is off by default now, as it should be. Chrome is a disk-intensive app. Full details are here:

Local app data written upon install
I am a nube of sorts with respect to portable apps. I remember an issue with FireFox that caused the local drive ( C:\) to be written to upon use. Does this Chrome also do the same? It appeared to when I installed it, and I am concerned that it will attempt to write data or files to devices that I use it on.
Can you clarify whether it will?
Thank you.
No
All apps at PortableApps.com are designed to remove local files on exit. The installer you saw was just downloading a file to the temp directory and then deleting it on exit (if it downloaded it to the flash drive, it would have greatly slowed the install).
Performance issues
I'm not noticing any performance issues with Rev2 version. It is really fast, much faster than any other portable browser I've tested. I hope that security is not compromised... Thank you for correcting personal theme and other settings issues, found on Rev1. It looks OK now.
Chrome IS fast
Which is why I prefer it over Firefox, and have since it first came out. The trouble is that it doesn't like to run directly from flash media (particularly low-end or very large drives). I think some of that can be helped by turning off the phishing filter, but other than that the only real solution is to turn RunLocally on, which has privacy implications. If you're running from a hard disk or a fast flash drive, it's not an issue.
Flash w/ Chrome
How do I install Flash on Portable Chrome?
It has to be installed on the
It has to be installed on the computer you use it on.
Incorrect
Chrome uses Mozilla plugins, and Flash is one of the few that's truly standalone, so you can just copy the Flash plugin for Firefox (npswf32.dll) into App\Chrome-bin\Plugins and you're good to go.
Doesn't come with plugins??
The fresh installation of this new release does not play flash content, but my native IE browser and my portable FireFox browser do on the same machine. Maybe there's something I'm missing here, but there are no plugins included with this install? There is no "plugins" folder. And the browser doesn't offer to install them on pages with flash content.
As per suggestions from other sites, I've tried creating a Plugins folder and copy/paste flashplayer.xpt and the accompanying *.dll but this doesn't solve the problem. Any ideas? Thanks!
Thanks a lot!
Btw, can you guys make the download location look somewhere else (like my documents or the desktop) so it doesn't create the Downloads folder by default?
"download": {
"download": {
"directory_upgrade": true,
"extensions_to_open": "",
"prompt_for_download": true
I doubt it. Though it would be interesting if it could.
?
Maybe by copying the "Preferences" file from Data\profile\Default
to App\DefaultData\profile\Default.
I guess.
App\DefaultData\profile\Defau
No. App\DefaultData is where the default configureation for a app is copied from. Chrome Portable would have to configure something within that bit of config gile I copied. If the config file supported it. I'm not a chrome guru yet, so I don't know if it could happen or not. But just from looking at it, I'd say not.

Easy
Click the wrench next to the omnibar, hit Options, and the download location can be set on the "Under the Hood" tab. You'll have to scroll down to find the relevant setting.
Fastest portable browser
I didn´t notice any performance issue neiher. Btw, I needed to do a lot of configuration to make FireFox's performance acceptable on a flash disk. Google Chrome is ready to go. Just install and go... no tweaking needed.
:)
thanks for the release I was having bookmark loss.
Plugins: Flash & Java
Is there anyway to make this Google Chrome Portable could use plugins like Flash & Java? And how?
Chrome browser
Guys...thanks! for providing this super fast browser for the Portable Apps suite. From the time it 'click' on it to load it is up and running on my home page in 2.25 seconds. Firefox (the default browser on PA) take 11 secs.
I looked around on the PA forms, etc and could not find a clear step-by-step way to make Chrome the default on PA.
Please, Please, PLEASE let us know how to make Chrome the default browser on PA. Many thanks!!!

Would like option to have Google Chrome for default browser
John, is there a way to make Chrome the default browser in Portable Apps?
If not, I would really appreciate that option if it is possible. Thanks!
not possible. Same with
not possible. Same with firefox. this is portable. We don't mess with the host computer like that.
?
I think he means "default Browser in PortableApps". Now, Firefox is set to be the default browser if you click "search the web" inside ther menu cause it was the only one at the time. Nowadays, we have 2 and some people want Chrome to be the default browser.
You got it...
Yes, I would like to have Google Chrome the default browser when using "Search the Web" or "Get more apps" from the Portable apps menu. Please let me know how to make this happen! Google Chrome is soooooooo much faster!
You cant make this happen
at the moment.
The default browser is hardcoded into the menu. Thats because this is from a time where there was only one browser available - Firefox. I guess John will make it changable in the next beta; but no one knows for sure until its out.
