Adobe Reader (it's not Acrobat Reader any more) is now a download of over 46MB. Foxit has also increased over time and now this portable version sits at 9MB. I wouldn't call it "incredibly small" any more, but it is significantly smaller than Adobe Reader.

hi

i noticed that i'm unable to switch to another language. i tried to select german but the applications tries to connect to the server. i have seen, that some language files are included, located in ..\App\Foxit Reader.

normal, or an bug?

Language support (for german) has been neglected for some time now. I switched to another pdf program partly for this reason (and for Foxit becoming a larger beast with every evolution step).
A german language file did not exist on Foxit servers the last time I looked. There was one for an older version as single download, but the was only partially translated. I don't know anymore, where I found it.
-edit-
I checked again, and there seems to be a newer file on their site, but it is the same as the one included (for Foxit 4.0.0.0619). The language system seem broken with V5.0.1 as no language file seems to work. I think it is a base app bug and therefore should be reported to Foxit (did not cross check, though, as I don't want to install Foxit Reader locally again).

i still like FoxIt Reader. not an problem for me to use english language, but that's reason #1 for the noobs around me to switch back to Adobe Reader.

i wrote them a mail some days ago. here is the statement:

>> Hello,
>>
>> We appreciate your feedback. I will definitely forward your comments to our
>> product manager for reference.
>> We are considering to hire professional to help to translate languages.

we will see Wink

Good job. Wink

btw. I have no problem using a program in english (i used foxit in english for the last few years because of the flawed translation). I switched to PDF X-Change viewer mainly because of speed issues and the hidden advertising in Foxit. I get the impression that Version 5 seems to have improved on that.
I like to have programs translated just for the reason that I often have to advise people (other teachers at my school Wink ) and it helps to be able give hints like "go to menu x and click option y" in the program language they use.

Version 5 only works in English and has no working translations for other languages. The standard local version installed on a clean PC works the same way. I've updated the app page to reflect this. Foxit is apparently aware and will hopefully fix it soon.

I'm sorry John, but that's only half the story. The added language files (and their selection) do work in general, but they have to be situated in a sub-folder named "lang" (situated in the same folder as skins, plugins, ...).

But to be honest, it seems - at least in the German version - Foxit didn't work on them since version 3.x as most parts of the menu(s) remain still in English and even old, meanwhile (I think since 4.x) not longer working shortcuts are mentioned. So the language files are of no real help for anyone and should therefore be deleted from the package.

Odd, because the app instructions say the Foxit Reader.exe directory. And the local version can't download any of them at all and is just stuck in English.

I've updated it to revision 2 which fixes the issue with Foxit not finding the included language files.

When I set it to be the default PDF reader, it completely jumbled up my desktop icons.
I'm going back to version 3.1.4 immediately, and for a long time.
Not impressed.

If you set it as the default, you're removing all portability. You should never do that for any portable app. That's what the base app is for.

It should not. A clean install does not. And the upgrades from 4.x to 5.x I tested did not either.

I was installing it over version 3.1.4, perhaps that was the problem. It definitely asked me if I wanted to make it the default PDF reader.
