I tried to install via updater (most current portapps beta suite) but this failed several times. Installing manually worked fine.

Yes, I tried to install via the updater, too. I've tried it twice on different machines but in each case I get an error saying the downloaded file is not a valid archive.

Haven't bothered to install manually - I'll wait a while to see if the updater version gets fixed.

Google Chrome Portable hash was incorrect in the updater DB. I've fixed this issue. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I could be wrong but I don't think you can. Portable apps by their very nature don't (or shouldn't) add anything to the registry. The app would have to be registered(?) for Windows to see it as a choice for a default program.
Also one of the reasons you normally can't have a portable app be a handler for various file types.
