logoThe Guide Portable 2.0 Rev 2 has been released. The Guide is a two-pane extrinsic outliner, similar to mindmapping in some ways, designed to help you organize information hierarchically. This release improves portability and updates to the latest installer. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. And it's open source and completely free.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

ScreenshotThe Guide evolved from the need to have an application that could organize information and ideas in a hierarchical, tree-like structure. Tree-based structures are frequently employed to manage information through a "divide-and-conquer" approach, wherein each level of the tree represents a further level of specialization of the parent-level topic — the best example of this being a book. The Guide is an application that allows you create documents ("guides") which inherently have a tree (which you can modify as you please) and text associated with each node of the tree. The text itself is of the rich-text variety, and the editor allows you to modify the style and formatting of the text (fonts, bold, italics etc).

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

The Guide Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Platform including the Menu and Backup Utility.

What's wrong with version 1?

Add: Actually I have problems with Rev 2. Keep getting the error message with both old and new gde files.

The file "*.gde" does not appear to be a valid Guide document.

It seems Rev 2 expects files to be found in certain directory, regardless where they were actually saved. I've now gone back to the previous version with no problems.

I have a similar problem with Rev 2, for a specific GDE file.

The file "*.gde" does not appear to be a valid Guide document.

All the other GDE files I have work fine. It's rather frustrating, because up until now everything was working perfectly. I'd likely try anything at this point, but how do I go back to version 1 when I've downloaded version 2 and v 1 is nowhere to be found? Sad

Any advice would be really appreciated.

The app didn't change between 2.0 and 2.0 Rev 2 at all. The only thing that was updated was the packaging format (aka updated PA.c Installer, slightly updated launcher to improve portability). You can find the old version on SourceForge.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I've more or less reconciled myself to the fact the .gde file is corrupted. The backup created was of the corrupted file itself, so that didn't help either. BUT I did have a manual backup of the file from eight days prior, so I'll build up from there. All that said, still love the app, but won't try to go near 200MB anymore.

Thanks for the reply! Smile
