Is it ok to associate video files with VLCPortable.exe?

I want to double click avi and vlc will open and play, so I set VLCPortable.exe as default player. Is this ok? because it's just the launcher.

However, it works with files with Eng filename, but didn't work with Chinese filename. vlc can correctly play files with Chinese filename if I drag n' drop the file on vlc screen.

Or I should set vlc.exe as the player? What if I directly double clicked vlc.exe? Does it write entry?

Can anyone help me please? Thanks.

I would avoid setting file

I would avoid setting file associations to portable apps. A file association creates a registry entry, making it non-portable. Also, if you were to do this, you would set VLCPortable.exe as the association, if set to \App\vlc\vlc.exe, even more portability would be lost

I see. And I didn't explain

I see. And I didn't explain my situation clearly.

I re-installed xp on my computer, and I just want to use portableapps to keep as few files as possible being written into the system. However, I would like to use association.

So I just need to set VLCPortable.exe as default player as what I did now? I've already run vlc.exe. Did it write any enty? If I run VLCPortable.exe again, will the entry be removed?

running vlc.exe directly

running vlc.exe directly probably did write something to the system. running VLCPortable.exe will unfortunately not remove it. The launchers will only remove stuff if it was created while it was running....this is to ensure that any existing local copy of the app will not get messed up.

If you are using these on your system only, with file association, then yes, keep it as you have it now with the files associated to VLCPortable.exe
