I would like KMeleon to be portable. I believe that it takes up less space than PortableFirefox and it uses the same rendering engine. Thanks!

I just found K-Meleon On The Move. You just run KMV.exe and it apparently runs from a USB key without any problems.

You have to install it, I'll bet that John could do it better with a launcher and all. It wouldn't take much time either. Reply if you agree John.
I've been checking KMeleon out to figure out what would need to be done. It's a pretty solid browser and has a decent fan base.
I'm doing another portable open source browser as well. More on that later. And no, no hints.

I hope to see KMeleon and the other browser soon. Thanks!
Do you know about how big it will be unzipped?
Considering KMeleon-On-The-Move is approximately eight megabytes unzipped, I'm guessing around eight megabytes.

Thanks! It would be a good alternative to PFF for those with smaller drives.
is around 8MB if you compress the files.. it just breaks auto-update, which they appear to have done with KMeleon on the Move.

As long as KMeleon is smaller and is still a decent broswer, I wouldn't mind the autoupdate being broken.

Portable FF is 8MB when compressed. But it breaks auto-update. We held it to a vote. Auto-update vs 8MB smaller. Auto-update won.

Those were the days ay John
Hello, I'm from the K-Meleon user forums and have done most of the recent work on making K-Meleon portable. I think there's a bit of misunderstanding here. There are already several reliable approaches to running K-Meleon from a portable drive, not just K-Meleon On The Move (KMV). For example, see also the KM@ setup. (KMV.exe and KM@.exe are the launcher programs themselves.) The smallest complete portable K-Meleon currently offered, already set up for KM@, is only a 5.9MB download!
Please let us know if you wish to adapt, or see deficiencies in, the current approaches to making K-Meleon portable. Further details of the portable K-Meleon projects are detailed at http://kmeleon.uk.to
With best wishes for the new PortableApps site,

I still believe that John should do his own portable app with a launcher, though I am grateful for input by someone involved with K-Meleon.

I'd be happy to create a launcher and "Portable KMeleon" package along the lines of my Portable Firefox package if it were desirable from the KMeleon folks standpoint. I've already mapped out how to go about it. The goal is to make ZERO changes to the underlying code and make adjustments to the settings files, etc with a launcher. That way, the KMeleon developers can keep plugging along as they do without needing to worry about a portable fork or other issues.
Let me know.
Regards,
John

Hello John,
Thanks for your interest. I think it really boils down to what the advantages/disadvantages would be over the portable options we already have. Increased choice is fine as long as it doesn't confuse potential users too much. Would it be possible to give us an idea of what you intend - something I could "float" in the K-Meleon forums?
Regards,
Douglas
I'd take a standard package of KMeleon. Compress the EXEs and DLLs using UPX (if not already done). Compress the JARs (if any) using 7zip to max level. Add in a launcher a la PortableFirefox.exe that would update the included profile details to the correct paths. Set a USERPROFILE environment variable and others, if needed. Display a brief splash screen for instant feedback for users of slower media. Add INI options for alternate placements of the EXE directory and the profile directories, etc, allowing it to be used standalone or with the new directory structure used by the Portable Apps Suite. Basically, very similar to my other apps. This wouldn't require any recoding or forking on the part of the KMeleon folks (that's one of the goals) and can be easily updated as new KMeleon versions come out.

Thanks for the prompt reply John.
Please give us a day or two to gather comments and we'll get back to you.
I just want to know what the status of your PortableKMeleon program is. I am really looking forward to this app.

I downloaded the .zip version of KMeleon from Sourceforge and all you would have to do is compress the EXE, DLL, and JAR files and it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 8MB. Add a launcher and you're done.
-Justin
There are multiple hard-coded paths within the profile that need adjustment as well.

So there are, I didn't notice that at first
