Hi. I’m having a problem installing OpenOffice Writer for use on my old Windows 98SE computer at home. It works great on my office Windows XP machine. Specifically, the menu bar (“File, Edit, View,” etc.) does not appear at all on the Windows 98SE display. From what I’ve read I suspect that I haven’t handled Java correctly, and I don’t know how to do it. Java 1.5 is installed on the local machine. Using the Java Portablizer 1.1 I imported the Java files to the JavaPortablizer folder which was automatically created on the portable device. I then copied all of the files in the JavaPortablizer folder and pasted them into “...\OpenOfficePortable\App\Java”. I did not past them into “X:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java” as is recommended, because I don’t have a “CommonFiles” folders on the portable device. The JavaPortable.ini file reads as follows:
[JavaPortable]
Vendor=Sun Microsystems Inc.
Version=1.5
URL=http://java.sun.com/
I don’t know how to configure Java for use with OpenOffice.org Portable, and I’d appreciate any advice whether or not Java is the problem. Thanks.

You mean actually "install" or just run your Portable App in your portable device in your Win 98SE PC?
If you want to install I think is better to you to use the regular installed version... in the case of Java, the same suggestion.

Thanks for the response. It's installed, and runs well on a Win XP machine. I can't see the menu bar when I try to run it on a Win 98SE machine.
That's a font issue. Just open OpenOffice.org Portable on a PC it works on. View - Options. OpenOffice.org - View. Check off Use System Font For User Interface.

Thanks for the response, and for your terrific work in putting all this together. I'm at my other computer (XP), and I see that the box for "Use system font for user interface" is definitely already checked. Is there a way to get to "Options" another way? I don't have "Tools" or any other menu items - the top bar is completely blank on my Win 98SE machine. BB
You don't want it checked.

I just checked on my clean Windows 98 SE virtual machine and it works fine. And that option is unchecked and grayed out (can't check it). Is it available for you to check? Does this Win98 box have all patches and the updated fonts pack from Microsoft?

I can't get to the option to see if it's available to be checked or unchecked. There's no "Tools" menu selection. As far as I know the W98 machine had all patches available until Microsoft support stopped, but probably not the updated fonts pack if that was a separate download. BB
uncheck, close it, and then open it on Win 98SE, just to be sure...

Thanks. I've tried it checked and unchecked followed by opening it on the Windows 98 machine, but it doesn't work either way. I can't get to the menu items even by using keyboard shortcuts. BB
Has anyone resolved this issue? I encounter the same problem on two Windows 98 SE systems.

As stated above, it's a font issue. You need to have the Microsoft Core Fonts package installed on Windows 98 for OpenOffice.org to work properly. Unfortunately, this package is no longer available from Microsoft as they have discontinued all support for Windows 98. I think it uses Tahoma or Verdana. You can probably download and install them all individually here:

As this issue only affects a limited number of Windows 98 machines, I don't think OpenOffice.org will be working on any fixes for it since OpenOffice.org 3.0 drops all support for Windows 95/98/Me.

That's handy for in the actual document, but we're talking about the OpenOffice.org interface itself and its known issue of having trouble working when the Windows core fonts are missing.

... and You are right, it seams that there will be no fix from OpenOffice.org for this issue.

I cleared "Use system font for user interface" on an XP system, but on a Windows 98SE system that had all Microsoft Core Fonts installed, the Menu bar was still blank in OpenOffice Portable Calc. Also Alt+F, Alt+T, etc. did not produce any drop-down menus.
Could this be a Java runtime issue? JRE 6 does not support Windows 98.
