Don't request non-existing apps

There is no such thing as a release of Thunderbird v3. Besides this Thunderbird Portable is a regular app at this site so there's no need to request a new version. You can be assured it will be published as soon as it's ready for prime time.

As a long time user on portableapps.com you could have known this.

TB 3 is still in alpha. John might go for late betas, but an alpha build is out of the question.

Scrap It

Whatever version T-bird is running under, Portable Apps should run far, far away. It is farging AWFUL. Don't fall for the hype and pretense. Although Windows Live Mail is by (gasp! horrors!) the dreaded Microsoft, it's a capable mail client and ACTUALLY CONNECTS AND GETS YOUR MAIL. I've wasted enough hours trying to connect with their latest version, and I won't ever bother again. Reviewers that say that Mozilla has stopped really trying to do a decent mail client are right. The current one really sucks, worse than the previous version.

Are you talking about TB 3?

Are you talking about TB 3? It's in alpha for Snarf's sake!
If you're talking about TB 2, you're not doing it right. I've never had any problems connecting (with several email providers).

Nope.

I don't waste my time on alphas, and seldom on betas, for snarf's sake. (WTF? Snarf?) I've had v2 working, both portable and desktop, and it's awkward and clunky. IMAP? Fuggedaboudit! It's been extremely user hostile. In all my years...never mind. Even though it's cool to bash Microsoft, Windows Live Mail is quite capable. Too bad it's not portable.

Don't use IMAP. I certainly don't.

It's esoteric. Wink

I second Bahamut

I'm on a dial-up connection that makes a snail look like the roadrunner and my TB vers. 2 is the only app that doesn't have any problems connecting. My Windows Outlook could only dream of being this good. It was never dependable, connect one day, drop in the midst of retrieving mail the next. Thunderbird has only done this once, maybe twice in the two years I've used it.

my broadband is dodgy, and

my broadband is dodgy, and the app that connects the most is TB3, and you still say it has problems?

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Me to

I am on a dialup connection and use Portable TB vers. 2 from my flash. as it is small and runs more easily than installing it on my comp (with dialup of coarse). I think this guy has had some probem with something that was affection TB like IMAP if you look up the TB forums on there site you can get all the help you need.

I wonder if he has actually looked up the TB forum on mozila site and found out the soultion to his problem.

This is most strange. THUNDERBIRD is the best email client i have used. If you want imap y not just use webmail.

TB3

is still in alpha if that's what you are referring to. TB2 has been the most solid, reliable, easy to use mail app that I have used/dealt with. That's saying something as i work tech support at an ISP and work with everything from WLM, Outlook, Outlook express, and windows mail to Thunderbird, to macmail, to Pegasus, to the bat, etc...

I'm sorry to hear you have

I'm sorry to hear you have problems connecting with Thunderbird but I think the fault might be something else than the Thunderbird application.

Well, I think if Thunderbird fails to get your email its probably caused by a firewall blocking your access or faulty information entered for the account. It always gets my mail when I try it so saying 'scrap it' because you can't get it to work properly is a bit harsh.

I don't know what Windows LiveMail is but I personally am trying to move away from some of the Microsoft apps for mail (ie Outlook Express) I used for many years.

If you're looking...

...at these posts any longer, you may see that I added a comment about the fact that I did connect, to some extent, but it's all been dodgy, really. I agree with others that I have read, that Thunderbird itself is seriously lacking. I suggest you check out Windows Live Mail just for the sake of becoming familiar with what it's all about. You know, sort of like becoming familiar with the 'wrong' political party's views so you can respond to them more accurately.

Erm...

Yes, we're all still reading this now, as you just bumped it after 3 months of silence. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Windows Live Mail is for email accounts with Windows Live, yes? There are dozens upon dozens of other popular mail providers out there, and Thunderbird will connect to near all of them. If you were trying to connect to Windows Live / Hotmail with Thunderbird, the problem may be the lack of IMAP support (yes?), and the fact that it doesn't like to cooperate with mail clients other than its own official ones. There's webmail extensions to account for that, but they can be sketchy as the system changes quite frequently.

one thing I do not understand:

how can one mail client 'connect' better then the other one?
Mailclients do not connect , this is done with your dial up , or LAN adapter or wifi device etc.
So from that point, it is irrelevant if you have OE, outlook, TB, Opera Mail, or what ever else.
The downloading of mail itself is very simple text commandsand protocol used is clearly defined and is for all participiants the same, it works even via telnet or from command line under linux for example. It is too simple to enable any mail client to make it better or worse.
I am still often using a mailclient called NETTAMER, it works under dos, does not use mouse at all and the performance is exactly same as any other mail client in this part.

OK, how the mails are displayed, well here one can argue who is presenting colorful spam mails better, this might be just matter of taste.

Using IMAP is becoming more and more popular, but also here, there can not be any difference in different mail clients, since again the protocols are predefined, all must use the same other wise nothing will work at all.

OK we had some discussion here abt opening large database files etc, can be, this is the only part where the designers are kind of free to make some own system for it.

But to say that one mail client 'connects' better then the other is very, very abstract statement.

So if you connect, but it does not work well, it has nothing to do with the mail client itself, but with your connection to internet, with your firewall settings, with security settings at your provider side etc.

FYI

Windows LiveMail is just part of the Windows Live sweet. including windows messenger, and few other apps. I never have used it and since i found AMSN i never use windows live for anything anymore. Its MICROSOFT and i am converting to Opensorce as much as I can.

I think i can say how to get

I think i can say how to get TB3 working portable

you can delete(after backup-ing) all the content in \thunderbirdportable\app\thunderbird\ & then copying there the content of the c:\program files\thunderbird (or whatever it is) of a local instalation of TB3

I tried & worked, but haven't tried to regshot it to see if it left any data behind
