How to force a POP download?

I've just moved over to Thunderbird from Pegasus mail, and am using version 2.0.0.17 (20080914). I have some notes on my mailserver that I can't force to download.

According to the main Thunderbird site, deleting x:\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\Mail\/popstate.dat should force a reload, and the dat file should have all sorts of info in there. The file doesn't have anything in it except a warning not to edit, and deleting it does nothing. None of the dat files for other pop servers contain anything either.

Is the popstate info kept somewhere else in the Portable version?

Thanks for any help

no

the profile folder looks exactly the same as in the local version.
The link to my postate.dat is x:\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\Mail\pop.gmail-1.com\popstate.dat. Did you make sure Thunderbird was closed while you deleted the file?

Thanks for the quick reply! I

Thanks for the quick reply! I expected a couple of days wait Smile

I had shutdown before. The original reference page said to shutdown, or edit the file while the program wasn't accessing the server.

I've just tried again making extra sure, and no better.

I don't understand why the popstate info described at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Popstate.dat isn't showing up in any of the popstate.dat files for the different accounts though. It must be being saved somewhere, but I can't find where.

hm

maybe someone else knows more about popstate.dat than I do.

Maybe there was some change

Maybe there was some change between 1.x.x and the 2 series, and documentation is lagging? I dunno.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway. Are you using the same version of Thunderbird? is there anything apart from

# POP3 State File
# This is a generated file! Do not edit.

in its popstate.dat files?

yes/no

I do use the same version, but on Linux.
But I only have the 2 lines in my file too.

EDIT: wait. I have several accounts and one popstate.dat file has more info. Did you check all of your Mail folders?

Only 64 bytes in all versions

Only 64 bytes in all versions of the file, but the modification date gets set when they're accessed. The info _has_ to be somewhere, but I can't find it. Thanks for checking.

I only hope it's in human-readable/editable form

Jim
