Something that folks might find interesting is that in this release, Stellarium finally has a native switch. Although the environment variable no longer works, the switch works great. The switch is in action in this release, and I'd like to hear what people think. The implementation of the switch is as follows: stellarium.exe --user-dir=$SETTINGSDIRECTORY
. That simple. If I could hear how it works with the INI especially, that would be a great help.

have been using the 10. beta for some time -> the portable version is great. As far as I can see from short testing nothing left behind in user/appdata.
Closing the window by the upper right ex produces some strange colour effects on restart till the splash takes over.Closing it by the red X works without those.
Own settings are kept. A real prerelease waiting to become final

I'm interested by the color effects, as I didn't notice any. Could that be an issue with Stellarium in general? Or have you noticed?

PC one WinXP SP3 domainuser account, no local Stellarium, clean %appdata%.
First install of StellariumPortable (settings default: full screen= false 800 x 600 display) on a 1280 monitor.
First start, cmd window appears, splash appears, window looks fine -> adapting location and stellar settings without complaint. Closing the Windows window (not by the red X at the bottom).
Restart and for about five times after:
Cmd appears, splash window appears, for the first three seconds filled with aliasing colours (- couldn´t get a snapshot -> lightscreen showed all but the right window)
then the right splash screen appeared and all was working fine.
Using the "default" red X produced no such phenomenon.
Adapted the settings to 1024 X 768 -> no strange effects anymore..
Good news: no settings left in the %appdata%
Second test WinXP SP3, Admin ,local copy of SP 10 Beta:
Smooth startup, no interference with the local config file (I changed some obvious settings ->full screen true / false). Nothing left behind and couldn´t reproduce the colour effects.

I found a path length problem similar to that in OpenOffice:
Installing StellariumPortable to the root of a drive or into PortableApps works fine, but starting it from: X:documents and settings/user/desktop/StellariumPortable produces a stall after the command window being opened..
And something interesting: the default config within the /app/stellarium/data folder is of 9.1 and it´s used by the launcher when the path length error occurs. Replacing it by a 10.0 config changes nothing -> still a stall though the 10.0 config appears now in the data/settings location ( as the 9.1 config did befor)
-> so, it´s no problem arising from reading the wrong config.ini but a path error..

Any chance you could narrow it down if you have a chance? See if it's a spaces problem or a length and if so what length. I did that for the OOo Portable launcher and it tries to warn users if it can.

Thought of that but neglected a space in my testing folder structure...it´s getting late..
Did a short test: even renaming StellariumPortable folder to Stellarium Portable produced the error.
EDIT:Stellarium_Portable works, up to nine folders without problems (stopped the test then) -> so it´s not a path length but a path name (=space) problem..
Second: it seems that SP 10.0 starts at first with the 9.1 config file -> but changing a setting will show the 10.0 settings at restart and forever. Could be a way of reducing bugs when upgrading to 10.0.-> no bug.

As much as I like Stellarium, 0.10.0 beta isn't quite ready for a full release. I've been playing around with the standard version (I haven't picked up the portable version yet) & one major problem I've ran across is making the jump from Earth to another spot in the Inner Milky Way.
Using the Sun as your reference point causes Stellarium to freeze up (or at least make it appear frozen, possibly hitting an infinite error loop or something) & forcing me to manually reboot the computer (something I try to avoid). I send a note to the Stellarium team on it... on top of all the other bugs with 0.10.0 beta ( see http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=48857&atid=454373 )
While I can't stop you from making a full release, I would strongly recommend that you note it as a Beta version to limit the complaints towards the portable devs.

I believe Stellarium has stable releases. It's all considered very pre-1.0. Every single release is essentially a beta.

But, from what I understand, John is right. Every Stellarium release so far is considered beta.
