Release Notes:
Pre-Release 1 (2008-10-27):
- Updated OpenOffice.org version
- New installer
- New launcher
Known issues (solved PR2):
Problems with App folder OpenOffice.org 3:
- rename App/OpenOffice.org 3 to openoffice
- rename OpenOfficePortable.exe to old.exe
- copy http://oooportable.org/portableapps/OpenOfficePortable.exe to Your installation folder
I've been playing with the standard version of OpenOffice.org 3.0, so naturally I was looking forward to the portable release. I'll post back with results.
Edit:
Works great from what I can tell. I haven't had any problems in testing so far. Great work.

Marco, would you please explain MVSRT?
What I found on Google made no sense.
it is short for MS Visual Studio Runtime and is part of the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributal Package.

Thanks.
Looks like I will be using this pre on such a machine tomorrow.
Any hints what I should be looking for? - The beta2 did fine there, though: There were no portable-related issues.
... a feature ;-), cause the portable will work on systems without the installed runtime, the full version perhaps not.

Installed it last night from my own VISTA SP1 PC with MSVCRT and ran it to change a few settings and copy a few templates back in.
Today I am running it at work on an XP SP2 without MSVCRT, additionally tried a new install into a different base path.
All three work fine so far. Temps go where they are supposed to go and get deleted after closing the app.
If I run into anything I'll let you know.
Cheers
Christian
Thanks! Downloading
on a really fast flash drive -yet:
an impression of slow startup, slow performance -> when clicking the menu you have to wait a second till it´s reacting and showing the dropdown
imagepacks other than the default are missing though listed in tools/options/view
-> copied the image.zip files from my local OOo 3.0 - afterwards icon change works
Copying the user data from OOo 2.4 at first start seems to stall certain times, one crash till they are copied to 3.0 settings
EDIT: same usb drive on office PC (not stuffed that much as my home PC, only 2years old, XP SP3 domain user, no local OOo 3): Smooth start, no delay. Working as usual and as my local Ooo 3.0 at home. Could there be an interference between local and portable app, or a higher memory usage than with 2.0, more files being loaded, Firewall/AVS problem?

I´ve checked it this evening, missed it the night before..
At home with OOo local and MSVCRT SP1 installed -> slow response

I tried both an update from the last portable version and a clean install and both fail in the same manor for me:
OpenOffice writer crashes just after loading and displays the document recovery screen, but with an empty list.
What ever option you chose it will load something, than crash again, display the same recovery screen, but now with "unnamed 1", whatever you chose, same again, loops from there,
After some time you get "through" but it does not open writer, it opens the default "chose document type"-welcome screen, if you chose text document, it starts all over again.
Same for any other OOo Application, but they show the empty recovery screen either on load or when you close them and start the above.

This happened to me too, on Vista Ultimate (x86) SP1. Worked fine under XP when I tested it there, but it enters the above-mentioned crash loop under Vista. My local copy of OpenOffice 3 works just fine.
... on Vista64 an is this version working?
Do You have a local installed 64bit java? (the portable is based on 32bit like the original too and will not work with java64bit)
I've only Vista32 home for testing :-(.
My collegua will testing it on 64bit.

Hm...
I use Java 64 Bit (and really use it).
I will try it with the 32 Bit Version later.
Will it use 32 Bit Java if I copy it like described in the OOoP folder somewhere and override the local 64 Bit java?

Just tried again with a fresh portable install, and now it won't start up at all. Starts fine if I run soffice.exe directly, but as we know, that creates a local profile.
Odd thing is, the first time I ran this copy, I saw the splash screen for a few seconds. But the main window never showed up and when I checked Task Manager, it wasn't running. Now it won't even show the splash screen before terminating.
Okay, and I just tried deleting the Data directory and running the portable again... The PortableApps splash screen stayed up for at least 30 seconds, then finally went away but now the OpenOffice splash screen is frozen...
Operating system, as I mentioned earlier, is 32-bit Windows Vista Ultimate, SP1. UAC is on.
Visual C++ 2005 runtime is installed.
Portable device is a Seagate FreeAgent|Go 250GB portable hard drive.
I can't get this to launch for me on my main PC. The OOo Portable Apps splash screen will appear and then be replaced by the splash screen for OOo3 which will go away... and then nothing. I didn't install to the default directory because I didn't want to lose what was already working for me.
I'm running Windows Vista SP1 32 bit. I'm pretty sure I have MSVCRT on my machine too. I'm happy to provide any other data requested to help get this to a final release.
Try to start App/OpenOffice.org 3/program/swriter.exe direct in order to see if it works without the launcher (attention: A local user profile will be created on the host computer!)
Paid for Software more or less?

Going right to the .exe itself worked. Will there come a time when a profile will not be created on the local PC?
Sorry, I completely skipped over the subject of the post. I installed to PortableApps\OpenOffice3PortablePR1
I'm getting the same error on Windows Vista 32-bit (no system pack)
Mine is now in the default directory - I thought that might help but it's giving the same error.
I tried starting the swriter.exe directly as Marko said and that works fine.
I have the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributal Package so presumably that means I have the MSVCRT
... but I can't reproduce it
Please try to rename the folder OpenOffice.org 3 to openoffice (under App), rename OpenOfficePortable.exe to another name an copy http://oooportable.org/portableapps/OpenOfficePortable.exe to Your OpenOffice.org Portable installation.
Please let me know if this will work for You.

Though I've not checked for anything left behind.
Thanks Marko

Spaces in filenames are not generally recommended, anyway. Makes life difficult for command line users.

I suppose it may be that I've not used the default installation directory but after downloading this new .exe over the one that was present I get the following message when using this launcher:
OpenOffice.org Portable (Test) cannot be started. You may wish to re-install to fix this issue. (ERROR: soffice.exe could not be found)

Great work on this app. I've been waiting for openoffice 3.0 portable for some time.

As Marko said you need to remove them with the extension manager
EDIT: Ah, I see what you mean about the error message. Mine closes fine afterwards though
I used the extension manager
Yeah, I realised you probably had after I tried it, hence the edit. Mine has no problems other than the error message though.
... this is caused by a wrong default directory for the extensions.
Will be fixed in final.

Just writing to see how come OO Base doesn't appear in the menu? I just deleted my old Open Office as I thought this was some update error but then realized when I did a fresh install its still not coming up. Anyone know whats up with this?

I'm using WinXP SP3 as my test system and PAM Mod34 as my menu; OOoBasePortable isn't showing up in my menus although it can be started from an explorer window.
It works just fine in the standard PortableApps.com Platform, so there's nothing wrong with the app.
PAM MOD34 is unofficial and unsupported. Maybe you hid it or something. You can check your settings manually I think.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
thanks for the reply John. I am aware that Mod 34 is not supported, but I thought complete info would better help debug the problem. [[With a 320gb drive and many PAF and non-PAF applications the standard PAM isn't handling the job. I am awaiting the soon-to-come, when-it-is-ready, enhanced standard PAM.]]
I know, but the app itself is sound and works just fine with the PortableApps.com Platform. So the issue is with PAM Mod. Which means it's not something that could be addressed in this topic.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Additionally, When I try to add it individually to the menu, I get a 'List index out of bounds(-1)' error message.
since there´s no official support to an unofficial mod: this is an old R3x mod bug.
If you´re really addicted to calling the OOoBase starter directly or just having it in your list of icons, there are two solutions you should try:
1: use "categorizer" hosted here in the Beta Forum (-> decompress with PortapleAppCompacter, open it with "reshacker" and replace the icon by yours, compress again, create a new folder under PortableApps and put categorizer and Ooo3 into it,refresh menu icons and you´re done: one icon and when you hit it, there´s a dropdown with all your starters.
2: create a bat like "start openofficeBase.exe" convert it with a Bat2exe, hidden modus and add an icon of your choice, put it next to the other starters and name it like MyOOoBase, that should work..

that´s a bug in R 3x mod, mocked about in the forum many times. I´m not talking of the OpenOfficeOrgPortable.exe that is concealed by design and called by all other starters..

Ah, I see now. I wasn't aware of that bug.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
since some more R34 mod users have been discovered now(-> i use it merely for testing purposes side by side with PAM 1.1 ),let´s come back to OOo 3.0 testing and leave the mod discussion elsewhere..

I have the same problem (also with XP SP3 and Mod R34),however replacing the launcher with that from the beta package shows up in the menu and appears to
work fine
Marko, let's ditch the multi-installer on this. Saving 10MB off a 250MB app isn't worth it with the translations and additional maintenance. We use a similar reasoning with the multi-lingual apps where it makes sense to separate out the locales in GIMP Portable (43.5MB out of 63.5MB) but not Celestia Portable (1.7MB out of 41MB).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Remove the python option?
a)let it as default installed
b)offer it as addon?
BTW:Because of the established modular built process it is no longer a big task.
Paid for Software more or less?
What You need is OSS!
There's just no need for it in terms of from an end user prospective. Most users won't even know what it means or if some of the extensions they're going to add use it.
It would be very easy to add the ability to leave off locales for Celestia... but it doesn't really gain much to save under 2MB off an app that's over 40MB. The same applies here.
And are we sure about future complexity? Remember that the installer has to account for every release of OOP we've done in terms of upgrades without removing user-added dictionaries, languages, fonts, extensions, etc. Would having Python possibly installed complicate that 6 months from now?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
what do You think about removing the sub launchers?
If I remember well the result of a discussion in the past was to hold on it?
BTW:OpenOffice.org 2.4.2 is behind the door. Should be offer it as portable too (for the Win98/ME users or not?
Paid for Software more or less?
What You need is OSS!
Keep the sub launchers as well. The next Platform will have an option of what to display for users.
I don't know about OpenOffice.org 2.4.2. I'm debating Win9x support for everything, actually, as pretty much every app we do has either already dropped support (Sunbird, VLC, GIMP, Pidgin, etc) or will drop Win9x support by the end of the year (Firefox, AbiWord, OpenOffice.org, etc).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Please portabilize 2.4.2. I'm on XP SP3 and my local OO v3 and portable OO 3 PR1 are giving me crashed and other problems (local and portable the same symptoms). 2.4.1 was working and stable.
The OS is MS TablePC 2005 based on XP updated to SP3. The MD5's are okay. After the initial problems I uninstalled and deleted the profiles and reinstalled. Just using the default setup now. After I get my symptoms solid I'll send something to OpenOffice but I don't want to uninstall yet (they've only got some annotated crash reports so far), but I also hate trying to use it for real work. So I'd love the 2.4.2 when you can.
---------
Just for FYI (I'm not expecting answers from PA.com as the Local does it, too. Just lobbying for 242!):
- Crashes after printing many odt files IF I changed printers (File.. Printers). As diagnostic, I can build an odt from scratch using the built in template, add just one 2k jpg and one character and one note, change printers and print...and OOo it crashes (closes, usually triggering the crash reporter right away, but sometimes only on next OOo launch). If I delete the note it doesn't crash. Or if I delete the jpg it doesn't crash. (and it isn't just one specific jpg doing it, but not all jpg do it, either...maybe one out of 25 that I try?)
- Zoom is only suppose to effect the screen view, but it effects Printing and doesn't respect the page margins: For example, if I zoom very small (like 20%), the page prints like an envelope with a stamp in the upper left, but Print Preview still looks "correct," by the way. Strangely, if zoom is moderately different from 100% (say, 80%), a document with notes looks EXACTLY (?) on screen as it did at 100% (which is wrong), Print Preview continues to look "perfect," (as it should), but actual print is obviously smaller.
---
Some of this may just be that the Help file didn't catch up with feature changes? There are other things that I just think were poorly thought out but may be working as planned (like the new Notes panel and the things it messed up), but I won't fill these pages with that stuff. OOo 3 opens v e r y slowly for me, too.
---
BTW, the "printers" I refer to are PDF Printers, not hardware printers like Lexmark and HP. I been using PDFCreator and PrimoPDF for many years. I added a few more to try and sort this out, like CutePDF. I'll be trying hardware in a few days.
Things seemed fine until OO 3, but I gotta admit there was a GhostScript change recently, but I rolled that back and I also used a non-GS PDF printer and it didn't change anything. And all my other "print jobs" like in Firefox and other editors seem like usual.
Unfortunately, MS updates and Java update and other changes also happened recently so I'm trying not to be too hasty sending reports to OO. I may try AbiWord and some other applications to see if anything seems odd there or if it is really only OOo.
Bh2ooo
OpenOffice.org has always been buggy. It's a shame, because it's a nice piece of software otherwise. But the crash issues and other miscellaneous bugs are why I'm still using MS Office. The Ribbon is also really nice--I wish they'd implement something like that in OOo!
... if the 3.0 portable is out.

Hi Marko. I don't know if you were asking me something. "if the 3.0 portable is out". "Out"? I can use 3.0, sort of, if that's what you mean. But would really benefit from having 2.4.2 portable. Quick update or recap:
Openoffice 3.0 (local and portable) when used "as installed" (and without importing my old profile info during installation) does seem fine for making new documents. So I wouldn't hold up issuing your portable version unless you're also hearing something from the OOo organization. (And thanks for your portablizing work on 3.0!).
But, if I use 3.0 on some (many, but not all) odt I made using version 2.x, or if I import my profile at the time of installation and create new odt documents, things can get strange (mostly noticed regarding printing, I think). The OO forums don't exactly address this, but frequently suggest "resetting the user profile". That removes the templates and similar mods and I kind of agree; I think something in template(s) used in my problem documents is bad and shows up in version 3. So I'm creating new templates, tool bars, macros, cell colors...whatever...in version 3. But I'm hesitant of editing my old (problem) documents in my new 3.0 lest it ruin the new profile I'm making. So...
So I would benefit from having 2.4.2 Portable. These documents work fine in my local copy of 2.4.2 and in the portable 2.4.1. (which I suspect is obsolete? I think the "point 2 fix" was a security fix but I gave up looking on the OO site. Is there some part of my local installation I can just "copy" into the 2.4.1?)
Thanks again.
Bh2ooo
Ha, Marko, just an fyi, your link at the top of the page (Application:OpenOffice.org) points to openoffice.org.org instead of just openoffice.org.

Shouldn't we ditch the specialized launchers for 3.0? OpenOffice 3 has the quickstart window now, so there's no need for separate shortcuts. Adding 6 (I think 6 is right...) shortcuts for one app is a bit excessive when you consider the existence of the quickstart window...
... most of users want the sublaunchers in the past

For the same reason that the local install installs links for each app. It's convenient. And it's faster if you want to start a new document to click the OpenOffice.org Writer icon rather than clicking OpenOffice.org, wait for it to come up, then click new text document, then wait for that to come up.

Hello world,
I'm the maintainer of http://www.framakey.org (community providing some portable applications packages for french users since 2005). Many of our launchers contains code from John or other portableapps team members, so thanks again for all the awesome work done down here.
You say :
"The final version will come in all main languages."
Do you mean that you don't need more help ?
If you need some, I'm ready (and will be pleased) to help in providing a french version of OpenOffice Portable in french. What would be the best way to participate ?
1. downloading PR-1
2. replace with OOo 3 FR
3. repackage
4. upload somewhere and post link here and/or directly to Marko ?
Do you prefer another solution?
I've got an hint from sophie gautier some days ago with the offer to make a direct contact between framakey and portableapps.com.
We ever need help especially for the localisation of the launchers, menus and more.
For OpenOffice.org Portable the job is nearly done, because of the new modular built process we are able now to create packages and languagepacks for the portables based on the core files and the OpenOffice.org language packs.
I'll upload the french package soon. I'll be very happy if You are able to test it and perhaps checks the language strings in /Other/PortableApps.comInstallerLANG_FRENCH and
/PortableApps.comLauncherLANG_FRENCH
and the work of the french dicts extension too.
The files are included in every package, so You can check it in the en-US or de-DE version if You dont want to wait
I know that framakey is wellknown in the french community and I believe it will be a big goal working together wherever it is possible.

Sure. I'll do that !
"I know that framakey is wellknown in the french community and I believe it will be a big goal working together wherever it is possible."
Sure.
Framakey has its own community, mostly because it's "french only" and a lot of our users can't easily found apps on a "most-in-english" website (even a clear one as portableapps.com). And also because I think we were the firsts to package portableApps tools into a easy to use "Kiosk" (in summer 2005, before PA Suite launch).
I must admit that I was afraid that PA became "non-free" (as in freedom) website some time ago, that's why I continue to update our own repositories. But I'm not afraid anymore, and as time goes by, the PA communities became stronger and stronger, so I started to propose some PA applications (like PokerTH or Gimp) mostly downloaded from PA.com (one of the thing I continue to modify is the default language, but all credits in code still goes to PA.com)
As I want to focus now on :
- "Framakey 2" (who could connect, download and install directly from the application manager, exactly as in Synaptic or Adept)
- "Webapps Portable" (like bitnami, but preconfigured)
maybe I should send some message on dev forum (or directly to John) to see how we could work together more closely.
By the way, I would be happy to specificaly help you on the release of OOo Portable
...'I must admit that I was afraid that PA became "non-free" (as in freedom) website some time ago'
Keep in mind that only GPLed or othe OSI-proved licenced Software is hosted on portableapps.com.
If I remember well one of the main reasons for the copyrighted stuff was (as I remember it) that there was a lots of forks and fakes without any credit to John and his work.
'maybe I should send some message on dev forum (or directly to John) to see how we could work together more closely.'

Of course, it will be better to use PAM, or even a full XUL solution.
But I think the real great idea is to "Keep It Simple, Stupid" and appsnap is great in that : a distant .ini file as a database, a synchronised one on local dir, and just some .zip files (that could be .paf.exe files, of course)
We modified the appsnap source so it could run on USB stick, and I use a zoho DB http://creator.zoho.com/pyg.framasoft/framakey-db/#View:Appsnap_list_View to generate .ini file dynamically. It's still in early alpha (you can download only one app at a time) but it works...
"The package is ready for upload."
Yeah !
(I've posted all my non-related OOo questions here : https://portableapps.com/node/16429 Thanks again John for the quick, but long answer)
Here's my test case :
PR1-en-US on XP2 SP3 with MSCVRT installed by a previous standard OOo3 installation
PR1-en-US on XP2 SP2 with no MSCVRT installed
PR1-en-US on Vista (not done yet, I'll edit this post)
Good news : everything's working fine
Step 1: launch OOoP Writer
Step 2: fill registration
Step 3: type some text and check dictionnary
Step 4: various function testing of writer (open, save, export, tables, etc)
Step 5: switching to OOo Calc
Step 6: various testing
Step 7: quit
Step 8: looking if some local files where written outside OOo-PR1 dir
All seems green to me
Just a question: is it normal that, when I use dictionary feature, the french dictionary is used? I thought it was necessary to download the good dict, and was surprised that it wasn't the en-US dict by default.

I just hope that these messages would fit in alert box.
I'll test under Vista today.
If you want another test case, just tell me.
And I'm waiting for a french version to test (and many Framakey beta testers are also ready to do so )
Keep up the great work.
If You could translate the help.html in App too we will have a great french package.
Please send it directry to markomlm[at]openoffice.org

Just a quick message to confirm that PR1 doesn't work on Vista (as previous tester noticed, same problems, same consequences)
I'll Wait for the PR2 with renamed "openoffice" directory
May the ultimate launcher be with you
... is availabe, see above.
Please test:
*Vista issue
*removing unwanted extensions
Thank You

I reported this same (non) behaviour with the English version over in another thread.
I downlaoded OpenOffice_Portable_3.0_en-US_PR_2.paf.exe on Tue 4th Nov 2008 at 21:41 GMT.
This is a hard failure with the OOo v3 launcher. Running the soffice.exe itself works.
I tried out the pre-release as a stand-alone app on Windows XP SP2 and it worked very well.
Will there come a time when this will not create a profile on the local PC?
The portable do not create a local profil.
Only if the soffice.exe is started directly (inorder to test if OpenOffice.org itself could start without the launcher) a profile is created.
So the final (as any version before) will not create a local profile.

I have searched here and abroad (internet) for a way of determining what, if any, MSVCRT a machine may have. I found no results.
So how do I know which version of the MSVCRT I have, if any, to assist with this test?
At work I searched my machine and see MSVCRT files dated from 1996 to 2004...
I will also try running the portable application in my portable VBOX installation. (I have not checked for MSVCRT there yet, but will before running the app.)
Thanks for the help, and thanks for the great work.

Portable VBox had MSVCRT from 1997 to 2003.
Portable application actually ran faster there than it did on my workstation. (Maybe a difference in location. Work PC ran from Flash. Virtual PC ran from HDD.)
Anywho looks good here at work. Tonight I'll run it on my WinXP and post what I see. I believe I have MSVCRT 2005 or better there because of M$ Visual Express suite installation.
