Suddenly I feel really newbish and dumb for asking..
But I'm new to using portable apps(which is strange because i'm usually traveling around with my dad) and i was wondering what are the best programs to have for your USB? I already downloaded Openoffice and Gaim and firefox, but I was wondering if there was other things you think would be really useful to have in the future?
I did search the Site like the guidelines said and the only thing that came close was the topic 'whats on your USB?' but you guys cite alot of programs that aren't on this site and sorta don't post many links.. (I don't mean that as an insult!!)
Did i post this in the wrong catagory? Oh well.. anyways incase it matters I have a Kingston DataTraveler 1GB USB 2.0 flashdrive.
and I want to use my USB for:
School(college work)
Security(My mom's comp is a wreck..)
and just all around recreational for when I don't use my comp(thus Firefox as mentioned earlier)
If it's not too much trouble i hope you could help me out.. *cough*

I've got my thumbdrive loaded with a lot of programs (taking up about 340 MB of space (about half just from OpenOffice :-| )) but just suggested some "barebones" stuff.
As for the security stuff in particular, it goes without saying that you should use their update feature *often* and that the main programs themselves may be revised occasionally.
To have a thumbdrive version of Ad-Aware and Spybot, I believe you install these to your PC, then copy the folder to your thumbdrive, while SpywareBlaster installs directly to the thumbdrive...if I recall correctly.
Everything else is generally unzip and/or copy and paste to thumbdrive.
From a "student" standpoint, these also might be helpful:
-EssentialPIM (planner) (make sure to get the free, portable version)
-Calc98 (multi-function calculator)
-Yadabyte Dictionary
-Converber (converts units)
-Notepad++ (more so if you are in a technical field)
-TextMe (notes organizer)
Backup the thumbdrive to a folder on your hard drive occasionally of course.

Though not programs, the following site is a good source for free writing style tips, and you can download PDF "crib" sheets for styles like MLA, APA, Chicago Style, etc., and can also download a copy of a book (in .hlp Microsoft Help format) called "The Elements of Style," all which can be handy to have on your thumbdrive, especially for high school and college.

Thanks! I'm actually doing an MLA paper right now.
And with Adaware it just let me install straight to the thumbdrive... and it boots up fine so i don't think there is any problems. (Should i reinstall it and do it the way you suggested?)

So long as it runs from a PC that didn't have Ad-Aware installed on it, you should be fine. If it didn't, you could copy the folder over.

EssentialPIM. This app has helped me SO much. I tend to be unorganized (just look at my desktop icons, what a *CLSTRFCK*, *cough*) and my only calendar was on my phone, which was a hassle to use. I started using it (EssentialPIM), and it helped me out a TON with keeping organized for school. I just started using it halfway through the semester, and It helped dramatically. I actually use it becasue I'm always on my portable, and it starts with PStart, It can be password protected, and It keeps me on track of everything I have to do.

My point - Really useful app for a student, especially the chronically unorganized.

There are thousand of better program than the dinosaur photoshop, have a try with the Gimp on this site (if you may need plugins, there are a lot available).
The Gimp is lighter, faster and more human than photoshop.
I notice that you have managed to make ACDSee Portable. I am currently using the old version 2.41 Classic and would like to make that portable. Can you give me some hints? RegRapper did not work too well.

do a bittorrent search for it. It is out there.....
GiMP doesn't support 16 bit..... I need 16 bit support for my job so I use CS 2.... it's not at all dinosaur like, monolithic and expensive for casual use maybe, but it's just a tool to be learned.... a browse of the freeware sites will bring up a range of very good image manipulation tools.... not all portable of course
