I had another portable program that I wanted to add to the menu, so i copied its folder into "PortableApps", and started StartPortableApps.exe - and the new program shows up in the menu - but with a bad name, i tried changing the name of the exe file, but the menu keeps using the same name - is there some way to rename what name gets shown in the menu?
could help. I also use software called 'resource hacker', but this one is not 100% portable, just works from stick.
Tha names are taken from inside the exe, so the only way is to edit it there.
make sure you keep original copy of the exe, since sometimes the modification breaks the file.

I wish all theses problems could be addressed.
Indeed. It could read an ini file or something like that.
Who can do that?
Well I have Resource Hacker (pity it isn't updated), and it turns out it was simple enough to change the name of the program, so thanks for that tip.
Do you have a link to that other program? Might be worth having a look at for the future
it is called, this is in portable apps format somewhere on this website, try search for it.

The easiest way to do what you want is to use a menu mod.
The PortableApps.com Menu is open source, and some people have taken the liberty to modify the existing code to address many shortcomings in the present menu.
Since these mods are not official changes to the official PortableApps.com Menu system, they are not officially supported by the official PortableApps.com.
One of the more popular ones is the R34 Menu Mod. You can find information on features, installation help, tutorials and of course download at:

Well, who does the "official" changes then - and why haven't they changed this - are they opposed to such a change?
Well don't say that
In fact the next release is supposed to have such a feature integrated, Release date however is at the time is really up to John Haller for that

From what I've read here, all of the mod authors have come onboard the official PortableApps.com Menu team.
I have heard some of them say that they don't want to create new features on their own because they don't want to later find that the official version doesn't implement things the same way, leaving them out on a limb, so to speak.
I have not heard of any efforts to bring the PortableAps.com Menu up to (or beyond) the current level of the mods, official or otherwise, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. Nobody has to clear things through me... I'm just an observer here.

Well I know it will be sometime around Monday (afaik) that there is going to be a new build of the menu (need to recheck the IRC logs to confirm) with some of the features requested implemented

For those of us in the US, that makes two much-anticipated events for the beginning of the next week.

..at least one will be able to dump in a "3rd party" portablised application into a folder and have it's friendly name recognised, not to mention less hard-coded methods of executing shortcuts whether it's via this (portable apps menu) application or another (xenon) I don't mind just do it please dev Gods!
