PDFs Kill Firefox

[Firefox 1.5.0.4 for U3 running on Windows XP SP 2]

Every time a PDF opens in the browser, Firefox freezes. Nothing is clickable. Eventually Firefox dies ("...is not responding.") and has to be killed through Task Manager. Anyway around this? As it is, if I'm sharp enough to notice that a link is a PDF I open it in Internet Explorer. But I want to use Firefox.

Two ideas.

1. Is your Adobe Reader updated. The latest release is 7.0.8. Then open Adobe Reader before you open the PDF file in your browser window.

2. Save the PDF to your PC/flash drive and open with Adobe or another PDF reader.

I had the same problem at first with FF 1.0 but since then I can usually open them within the browser.

I think you will find that your Adobe is having trouble opening the file within PFF.

Good Ideas, As I Feared

Yes, PDFs open fine when I open them outside the browser. Which confirms my fear that "Adobe is having trouble opening the file within PFF." Oh well..amother item for John's 'to do' list Smile

Disable the Plugin

It's best to disable the PDF plugin in Portable Firefox as you never know what version or how stable it is as you switch PCs. To disable it:

1. Click Tools - Options
2. Select the Downloads icon
3. Click View & Edit Actions
4. Select PDF in the list
5. Click Change
6. Select "Open Them With the Default Application:"
7. Click Ok. Click Close.

I used to recommend this with Adobe Reader 6 for all installations of Firefox (local or portable), since it was so bad in terms of start time and the FF plugin was awful.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I'll Give It A Try

Hi John. Thanks for the advice. I've made the change as you suggested and will report back on my success (hopefully.)

I'm not sure why, but Adobe Reader takes absolutely forever to open when you try to open a PDF directly in the browser (it will eventually open, but it can take a while). I think it has to do with the fact that when you open a PDF from the Web, Reader tries to download it on demand without giving you any feedback that this is happening. When you open one from your computer, no downloading is involved, so Reader is able to display the PDF instantly.
