2 Questions

1) To run the apps does my usb stick have to be in all the time for the program to work?

2) Can it overheat aka the usb flash drive?

1) Yes, if the drive isn't plugged in, the program isn't "there".

2) Not really. Most flash drives don't have issues with continuous use even. And portable apps don't read and write continuously, just in spurts.

Yes and No

We have lots of test releases here, but some may leave some things behind:
https://portableapps.com/development/test

Some projects also maintain their own portable versions of their software. WireShark, for instance, does their own PortableApps.com Package. Others have zip files you need to manually install. Most of those will leave registry keys, empty directories or log files behind (usually your settings are kept on the drive, though).
