IRC trouble

As some of yyou may know we had a spammer come onto our channel last night on IRC and started well… spamming it. We quickly found out that this spammer also had an anonymizer so we could not ban him or even track which person it was when they entered into the channel. After 2-4 hours of work we finally got a solution that worked and were managed to bring the channel under control. Right now I want to point out some people that helped out a lot and that we should thank for of the help they gave.

  • Ben - Ben was our spotter, I think he was 9 for 10 in spotting which one was the spammer(The only one he got wrong was the IRC staffer who came into help :P) and also coming up with the idea that we should move to the -ot channel to talk.
  • Tim - Our control op, he was the voice of reason in our group. So while the rest of us were willing to move in slightly illegal territories to deal with the spammer, he brought us back
  • MaienM - Made the bot that we needed, MaienM came up with the idea for the CurseBot, which allowed us to open up the channel so that we could work comfortably. Wanna know what it does? Go to the main channel and say F*G.
  • OliverK - command op. He did all the commands that were needed to control the channel. So that at least we had a fighting chance against the spammer.
  • Kevin - first command op. Along with Oliver, Kevin was the other person that helped maintain the channel by attempting to ban the spammer.
  • Brian_S - As alpha1 pointed out we will also want to thank him, as he tracked the ip of the user and determined that it was an anonymizer that was being used.
  • Gizmokid2005 - how could I forget him, Gizmo was the person that the spammer was attacking, and he was also the first person who dealt with the spammer.

Honorable Mention OPs (Essentially people who did stuff when I was not there)

ZachThibeau
RichiH

There were many more, and please do not think that these were the only people that helped. These were the ones that I saw that helped while I was there. If you guys feel that there is anyone else who deserves mention please put it in the comments and I will add them up there.

However, the above mentioned people put a lot in to deal with the channel, please go ahead and give them a hand for the work they did to keep the PortableApps channel alive and functional.

Regards

FYI

He started all this yesterday Morning. I took care of him then. I've managed to get a way to partially keep him out of the room if he hops in. It's not the best but it will work. I will be in all day today, and I'll try to stay on here throughout the day tomorrow too, but it's family time so we'll see.

and thank freenode staff

and thank freenode staff RichiH who saved our butts a few times, but the ops and MaienM and ben did great. and Brian_S for tracking the spammer's IP to determine it was a proxy.

Lead, Follow, or get out of the way.

Aww, how sweet ....

What I really love is how because I dare to have a *gasp* normal conversation in a "support channel" and get booted/muted that everyone apparently assumes that I somehow love to take time out of my day to sit in front of a computer and spam flood a group of incompetent social misfits for my leisure.

Please note, my time is a tad bit more valuable. What's even more neato' groovy cool is how nobody thinks enough to even ask me or inform me of what's going on, rather I have to find out for myself I am apparently being accused and executed by the jury of "the misfits" for some lame little events which have occured. Ben, your little bot/clone following me around the net isn't very inconspicuous nor prudent to anything useful.

Let me close by saying I really don't care about your little problem, nor if you fix it or not. I don't honestly believe I need to dignify the accusations as you can pretty well get a very clear understanding of my position.

Do as you wish, it's your time to waste not mine Wink

Your name should not have

Your name should not have been thrown about.

Your original comment was better by the way, I'm sorry you felt the need to change it. It was a little less "biting" but i guess you do have the right to be pissed.

Tim

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

Not a Large Issue

I've seen his too and though about it. His links to a users page on this site. The issue is mainly about self-promotion. However, I will ask him to remove his as well in fairness.
