after installing Thunderbird Portable i've set it to be the default email client for my OS and also use the MinimizeToTray addon i can see the incoming mails all the time in my tray... and normally when TB is minimized to tray and i hit and email address in Opera or IE the write new mail pop-up window shows up and the sender is my default user profile... so far so good...
well... when i hit an email address in Firefox Portable and thus activating the mailto protocol... thunderbird's wizard for creating a new account shows up instead of the send a new email window... and yes... the mailto protocol is set correctly in FF and also in the registry like this:
"E:\\programs\\portable software\\ThunderbirdPortable\\App\\thunderbird\\thunderbird.exe\" -osint -compose \"%1\"
this strange problem occurs only in windows XP... in Vista 64 works well... go figure! and i use the same Firefox portable, Opera portable and Thunderbird portable there as well... i've checked the registry and it all seems to be the same as in XP or at least almost... it's a 64 bit OS after all... you know the wow64 stuff..
anyway i thought maybe you guys know something that i don't know... and believe me i've searched like crazy on the internet for this problem an i have no idea how to fix it!
thanks in advanced!
respect,
Cristian
so no ideas yet?? anyone?? come one people... at least give your best shot!
That's not something you're supposed to do. You should never directly use TB.

@ dpcdpc11:
"...and yes... the mailto protocol is set correctly in FF and also in the registry like this:
"E:\\programs\\portable software\\ThunderbirdPortable\\App\\thunderbird\\thunderbird.exe\" ..."
This doesn't look like being set correctely , since, it points to thunderbird.exe instead of ThunderbirdPortable.exe.
Under Windows, HDD installation, the default path is as follows: C:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\ThunderbirdPortable.exe
dude i don't mean to insult you but... are u shitting me?? what are u a noob or something?? who the hell installs a portable app in the default folder??? or any software as the matter of fact?? that's not the freaking problem dude!! read my first post... i have no idea how firefox can treat the launch of thunderbird.exe as a new instance of TB which is not portable and wants to make a new profile... even thought TB is actually running in background...
if i launch E:\programs\portable software\ThunderbirdPortable\App\thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -compose from total commander or any file browser... TB works like it should... meaning that it's opening a new 'compose' windows with my default profile as the sender... the same firefox portable works in my onther os(Vista).. and also works from Opera and IE7 both from xp and Vista
Why don't you use the desktop version? Thunderbird PORTABLE wasn't created to be used this way...
If you use thunderbird.exe instead of ThunderbirdPortable.exe, you break the portability. Your settings wont go to data folder, etc...
why do you think dude? i mentioned above that i'm dual booting Vista and Xp... can you see the connection or do i need to draw you a sketch?? and in case anything goes wrong with either of my OS my emails are safely stored on a neuter partition... that's why i use the portable version... duhh!! and you don't seem to know much about this portable stuff dude... if the thunderbird process is already running and you lunch another instance of thunderbird.exe... and it's set to single instances then it wont open another instance, instead it will you the already existing one... that's how it works from any command line(file browser, run...or whatever) but acts stupid only when lunched with the mailto protocol from firefox in Xp... and i thought it has to be a registry glitch... but all the registry seems ok after comparing it to Vista's reg... and so can't find a logical explanation... and that's why i'm turned to this forum, thinking that someone could help... and boy a was wrong! it's like talking to some mirc bots or something!
I don't think you know what you are asking to do. TBP cannot be registered as the default email client. If you do it will cause problems. You were lucky that it worked when you launched thunderbird.exe when it was already running portably. What you are asking to do seems similar to removing a hard drive from a computer while it's running and expecting nothing to happen.

the people are trying to give you some help, but you seem to be just not patient enough to listen to them.
They just wanted tell you, that if you 'misuse' those portable apps the way you are doing it, problems are included and results unpredictable (as you have noticed with your installation).
The portable appse here are designed to be started by the launcher and not by the exe itself.
Depending on where some traces of profiles are found it might probably work or might not.
Starting the TB by the exe will in general produce things that are more local installation then portable.
Sure it is possible to connect mailto to the portable TB, I tried and all did work fine, but one has to think all consequences to the end. You could also use two installations of TB, using the same data files.
This is what I am doing also with outlook for example on my work laptop.

thanks for yet another useless reply! how does people help when i ask one thing and they reply another??
do i really need to repeat myself a third time??? naaa.. not gonna do it... gonna solve this on my own... thanks for the 'professional' help and telling me what i already know! and you're all talking like i'm 'misusing' a nuclear warhead or something... geezz ppl! i'm just using it to fit my needs... anyway a clean install of Xp i think will make this problem disappear and i'm gonna do that when i got the time and stuff...
sorry we cant help you because you dont want to be helped at all.
But just one more try:
You want have separate installation of TB on vista and XP dual boot.
This is OK and you can have one data folder on third partition or under certain conditions also on a portable drive.
It will be much easier to be done with the normal version of TB, since only there you have the full flexibility.
But would work also with portable version if you make popper setting to the ini, you may go yourself into the source of the launcher and there too what is happening.
Anyway, all the command you should in case of portable version point to the launcher and not to the exe itself as others told you here, unless you want use the original desktop meant version.
In you case I assume, but can not say for sure, the TB is looking for profile folder where it expects also all the setting about your account etc, and it can not find it in the place it is told. In the place it might find local folders, but not the folders of your actual accounts. And this is why it wants create a new one.
If you use the launcher, all will be more simple for you I think at the end. You can first clean all rests of registry entries and folders in application and data you produced with calling up thunderbird.exe and then set the portable version with proper settings in the ini.
And then make sure, that where ever the TB is looking for its mail folders, also folders of the account settings are.
The mailto entry can also be then done by hand in the registry, I have tried just now on my laptop with dual boot to w98se and w2k and when done slowly by hand, then one can remove all keys after in the reg too.

finally fixed this crap!!
as i suspected the problem was Firefox... obviously since the mailto protocol was working fine from the other apps... i set my portable firefox to be multiple instances true so i could open the new beta portable firefox 3.1 at the same time as my default one... so that was problem... really glad i've figured this one out!!
ieeeei to me!! damn i'm good! dunno how non of you pros thought of that... i mean really people!!
thanks for the 'help' anyway!
peace!
SEARCH THE FORUM BEFORE POSTING, this question is all over this website. People are trying to help you, no offense but you are with no doubt the noob in this. Typical human behaviour, so predictable.
dpcdpc11,
Before you go on a shooting spree, let me explain that the "default path" was provided as an EXAMPLE, only.
