Your update and release of Portable Firefox version 1.5.0.3 was so fast and now?
And no, I don't want to download 1.5.0.3 and then update to 1.5.0.4..
You could say the same procedure to Portable Firefox 1.5.0.2 and then autoupdate to 1.5.0.3..!
Please release it soon, I can hardly wait for this.

Ok, I am not John. I am not a PA.com developer. Heck, I am not a developer of any kind. But I am curious why one would push for John to develop and release a copy of a patched app when downloading the n - 1 revision and patching it yourself is so easy and will result in the exact same thing (assuming John is not going to make changes to the directory structure again or something like that).
Even assuming John IS planning something super desirable for the offical PA.com release, I am sure that he's not planning anything that will change things so drastically that copying your profile and perhaps a couple of other files won't suffice when the release does come.
So why rob yourself, if you really want 1.5.0.4 immediately, and why pester John if you don't?

I am also waiting for portable firefox 1.5.0.4 to release. If I knew how I would create portable firefox 1.5.0.4 myself.
Okay, not the only way to do it... there are many... but here's what I would recommend.
If you are already using Portable Firefox:
1) Copy your whole Portable Firefox directory to somewhere else (local computer Desktop, another portable drive, another folder on the same drive). Now you won't muck up your existing copy if something goes wrong.
2) Make sure no other copies of Firefox or Portable Firefox are running.
3) Launch your copied version of Portable Firefox.
4) Select "Check for Updates" from the "Help" menu
5) When prompted run the update.
6) When it tells you to, restart this copy of Portable Firefox.
7) Wait patiently.
8) When you see the one time Firefox successful update page you are done.
If you don't already use Portable Firefox then just download it, extract it, put it on you portable drive and do steps 4 through 8 above before you start adding extenstions and themes.
Done.

I understand that Portable FireFox update does not function correctly. Is it true that it downloads standard FF update? I was using FF-V1.5.0.4 Then, after re-installing the whole WinXP I decided to make a separate partition with alle my data and Portable programs as far as they are available. Now I have the following drive/directory: H:\My documents\PortablePrograms\PortableFireFox Standard FireFox has been installed in \Program Files\FireFox I have installed PFF-V1.5.0.3, which I think is the latest version. However this one askes reatedly for FireFox V1.5.0.4 So, I think, this is a piece of code from standard FireFox and when activated, it loads V1.5.0.4 for standard FF. After a while it says: download completed. QUESTIONS I want to know: 1. Where is the update downloaded? (I choosed download, not install). Perhaps somewhere in standard FF in stead of PFF? 2. How can I determine if this is the FF version or a PFF version 3. How can I determine if this is an update or complete version 4. How can I determine which versionnumber before unpack and use? 5. a. Why don't you disable the possibility of automatic update as long as it does not function well? b. Why don't you warn users on the PFF download pages to disable update, because it does not function well c. Why don't you tell on all PFF pages that automatic download asks for V1.5.0.4, which doesn't exist, so people better disable that function (as long as you did not solve the problem and did not remove the update function?)Okay, there was no need for the <pre> tag, but whatever...
Updating Portable Firefox through the standard channels works just fine. The "partial update" may fail, so then it'll download the full update, which will succeed. And no, it won't transform your portable version into a "standard" local version. You fail to realize that PFF is really just a stock copy of Firefox with a custom launcher, so there's no reason auto-update wouldn't work.

If you had taken the time to read the posts you would have seen the John and others have been rather busy. I guess you are one of those who expects everything from others and give nothing of yourself. A small amount of effort on your part provides you with 1.5.0.4. As for the rest of us, we would rather see these fine folks creating new things and not spending times doing things we can do for ourselves.

Now I'm having flashbacks too...remember a program called "Stacker" that also did the doublespace thing? That's back when the rule was for hard drive cost was something like "a dollar per megabyte"...does anyone even "doublespace" hard drive's anymore?
I'll never forget getting my first computer, a 386SX-25 for $1100 after a 40 MB hard drive upgrade to 107 MB raised it from $1000...I'll never forget how the salesman said a 107 MB HD "is 'cavernous'...it'll last you for years"
I even remember a program to optimize memory made by a company called Quarterdeck...program called "Qemm386" I think...getting the most out of the 640K RAM, loading stuff in the HMA, deciding how much RAM goes to extended memory vs. expanded memory...

that to upgrade to 1.5.0.4 I simply do "check for update" , let it run, and that's that?
There is no other process involved?
If this is the case, what else does John do when he releases a new version of portable Firefox (no disrespect intended, just a genuine question)
Sometimes he updates the launcher, but nothing else other than including a new version of the Firefox binaries. But you already know that.

For PFF as well as PTB, John also used to do the UPX compression of the exe and dll files before that became a no-no for their legal distribution. This is still done on all the other portable programs.

I'd like to add (now that I know I can update these programs myself) is that the "partial" update doesn't seem to work, and it makes me do a "complete" update, this is on both Firefox & Thunderbird. I just thought I'd mention it, I don't know if it means anything.
Yeah, not sure why, but PFF/PTB rarely update successfully with the partial update. Nobody's been able to figure out why.

Additional info:
I did that update in a separate directory while no other FF was running.
But when the program said, the update was succesfull, Menu - Help - About Mozilla FireFox still tells me, it is V-1.5.0.3!
1.5.0.4 with updated launcher is in Beta testing right now. It fixes some issues, such as updating.

I am a bit angry because the update of firefox portable 1.5.0.3 was not really ok. I had to make a complete update. The other problem is that I cannot install the file de.xpi because it is created for firefox protable 1.5.0.3. So it dosen't work after the update.
I would be very pleased if somebody would put on the portable firefox site the new german xpi-file. Thanks a lot. Bye.
As far as I have understand PFF it update but himself, even the portable subject that the update is set to automatic (as mine). Regarding the xpi-file german version,since my understanding is that mainly the programs are developed from a base of english language I believe you will be able to find it thru a search on google/yahoo/ and Co.

Yeah, see, if you'd read around the forums a bit, you'd discover that the problem of it having to download the full 6-7 MB update is a known issue. We can't fix it because nobody can figure out why it's happening. It didn't happen going from 1.5.0.1 to 1.5.0.2, but it seems to have happened with every other version.
Also, don't take it out on us just because a certain extension was created for a specific version of Firefox and won't install after the update. That's the extension developer's own stupidity; we can't do anything about it. Besides, you had fair warning: Firefox does tell you ahead of time which extensions will stop working if you go through with the update.

I have deleted Firefox because I couldn't install the Language Pack after Firefox was updated. Now I have installed firefox 1.5.0.3 new, the locale switcher 1.5.1, the language pack (for firefox 1.5.0.3) and done the complete update to firefox 1.5.0.4.
You wouldn't think, the translation feature is working although firefox said it wouldn't because of the version problem. Yesssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!
I'm running FF and Pff since some time ago, its better and more open minded to work with. Mine with the update option set to automatic is already to version 1.5.0.4 and for translation I installed the extension "Foxlingo" it translate to and from 35 languages and local major dialects so its not a trouble translating even a full web site with foxlingo(is done in less than 45 secs). Thus solving from the begining any problem.
